Kenya's Two Greatest Parks — Flown Between

KE-S2 is the fly-in version of Kenya's most popular two-park combination — Amboseli and the Maasai Mara, connected by a 75-minute flight rather than a road day through Nairobi. Two nights at Amboseli delivers the full elephant and Kilimanjaro experience, and three full Mara nights provides the intelligence-led big cat immersion that the Mara rewards when given time. The entire program is airborne from Nairobi to Amboseli, Amboseli to the Mara, and the Mara back to Nairobi — no road hours lost.

The additional Mara night compared to the 6-day KE-C4 program is not a luxury — it is the difference between visiting the Mara and understanding it. Three nights allows the guide to move from general orientation on Day 1 through productive encounter on Day 2 to the precision targeting of Day 3, when accumulated knowledge of pride locations, cheetah territories, and leopard behaviour produces the encounters that make the Mara genuinely transformative rather than merely impressive.

Your Journey, Day by Day

Day1

Arrival

Arrive Nairobi: The Kenya Journey Begins

RYDER Signature meets you at JKIA and transfers you to your Nairobi hotel. Day 1 is a rest day — dinner and the safari briefing map the six days ahead. The briefing covers the fly-in structure, the Amboseli elephant population and Kilimanjaro context, and the Mara’s current big cat conditions from weekly field reports.

The packing briefing for the fly-in format is important: 15 kg soft-sided bag plus 5 kg day bag is the aircraft limit for both the Amboseli and Mara flights. Your guide explains the weight restriction clearly and offers packing advice for seven nights in safari country.

Day2

Fly to Amboseli

Nairobi Wilson ✈ Amboseli: Under the Mountain

Morning transfer to Nairobi Wilson Airport for the 30-minute flight to Amboseli airstrip. The approach to Amboseli is one of Kenya’s most dramatic domestic flights — the Kilimanjaro massif appears directly ahead as the aircraft descends, growing from a vague white shape to an overwhelming presence. Your guide meets you at the airstrip and the game drive begins immediately on the transfer to camp.

The afternoon drive introduces the Amboseli elephants and the Kilimanjaro backdrop. The swamp areas attract hippos and waterbirds; the open plains are patrolled by cheetah and lion. The first sundowner with Kilimanjaro above the acacia horizon closes Day 2 — the mountain turning from white to gold to rose as the sun sets.

Day3

Full Amboseli

Full Day: Elephants at Their Most Intimate

The full Amboseli day deploys across dawn and afternoon game drives. The dawn drive opens the Kilimanjaro window — the first two hours after sunrise are the mountain’s clearest period, and the elephant herds that move to the swamps at dawn create the iconic image: tusked bulls in the foreground, the snow-capped summit in the background, the acacia silhouettes against a pale yellow sky.

The afternoon covers the swamp systems for the second big cat window — lion and cheetah are both resident in the park’s open terrain. A walking safari at some properties (LUX/HEL) can be arranged for the late afternoon to give guests a ground-level perspective on Amboseli’s landscape and its elephant-trail network before the final sundowner.

Day4

Fly to Mara

Amboseli ✈ Maasai Mara: Ecosystem Shift

A final short morning drive at Amboseli before the airstrip transfer and the 75-minute flight to the Maasai Mara. The ecological shift visible through the aircraft window is complete — from Amboseli’s volcanic grey-green basin to the Mara’s red-oat grassland gold. Arrival at the Mara airstrip and the first game drive begins on the transfer to camp.

The afternoon drive in the Maasai Mara announces a completely different Kenya: open rolling grassland, the Mara and Talek rivers as predator corridors, cheetah visible on termite mounds from 500 metres, lion prides resting in the shade of whistling thorns. Two nights and a full day ahead — the guide begins building the intelligence map that will maximise the time remaining.

Amboseli ✈ Mara Fly Connection First Mara Drive
Day5

Full Mara

Full Day: The Mara in Full Expression

Full day in the Maasai Mara — dawn to dusk across two extended drives separated by camp lunch and rest. The morning drive at 06:00 targets the overnight predator movements: the pride on a kill, the cheetah female starting her morning patrol, the leopard in the riverine fig tree at the Mara River bend. The Mara’s resident wildlife is exceptional in all seasons — the full day allows complete coverage of the primary predator territories.

The optional hot air balloon for pre-booked guests replaces the morning drive with an extraordinary dawn perspective — the herds visible from above, the crossings (in season) as churning white water in the river bends below. The afternoon continues the morning’s targeted program through the golden hour, ending with the field sundowner on the open plains.

Day6

Deep Mara

Intelligence-Led: The Mara at Its Most Targeted

The second full Mara day deploys the accumulated intelligence from yesterday’s drives — the pride’s overnight movement, the cheetah’s morning circuit, the leopard’s favoured afternoon tree. Day 6 is the most precisely targeted day of the program: not a general game drive but a specific expedition to the highest-probability positions at the highest-probability moments.

The afternoon continues through the golden hour and closes with the program’s final sundowner in the field — drinks and snacks on the open plains, the Mara sky cycling through its extraordinary evening spectrum behind the acacia silhouettes. The final Mara evening is a specific quality of experience that guests who have never been consistently describe as transformative.

Day7

Departure

Morning Drive → Fly-Out: The Plains Recede

Final morning game drive before the mid-morning airstrip transfer. The dawn Mara on a departure day carries a particular quality — the knowledge that this specific light, this specific grassland, will not be seen again from this exact vehicle. The guide heads to yesterday’s most productive positions one final time with fresh overnight intelligence.

Morning flight to Nairobi Wilson Airport, arriving before noon. RYDER Signature transfers you to JKIA for international departures or to Nairobi city hotels. The program delivers what its name promises — Kenya’s highlights, flown to and between, with enough time in each destination to go beyond the surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

KE-S2’s flying format — flying to Amboseli, connecting to the Mara from Amboseli by air, and flying back from the Mara to Nairobi — delivers game drive time that the equivalent road circuit cannot. The Amboseli to Mara road trip via Nairobi would take 7–9 hours; the domestic flight from Amboseli to a Mara airstrip takes 60 minutes. This saves approximately 6 hours of travel time that the flying format puts back into game drive time. With 7 days and three parks (Nairobi + Amboseli + Mara), the flying format is the only way to give each park its full allocation — two Amboseli nights and three Mara nights — without either park feeling rushed. The road-circuit equivalent (KE-S1) covers four parks over 8 days; KE-S2 covers two parks with deeper time allocations over 7 days.
Three Mara nights is RYDER Signature’s recommended minimum for the intelligence-led precision that the Mara’s resident predator population rewards. Day 1 afternoon: the guide builds the initial intelligence map — lion prides’ territories, cheetah circuit, leopard riverine tree positions. Day 2 full day: the intelligence deployed at increasing precision — specific animals at specific positions, the guide targeting rather than searching. Day 3 morning: accumulated intelligence from two nights produces the most precisely targeted game drive of the program. The transition from ‘searching for wildlife’ to ‘targeting specific known animals at specific positions’ typically happens between Night 2 and Day 3 morning — the intelligence inflection point that three nights specifically enables.
Two Amboseli nights delivers two morning game drives in the Kilimanjaro window (the mountain most clear in the first 2 hours after sunrise) and the full elephant family encounter that the research-habituated population provides. The first morning confirms the family groups’ current routes and the Kilimanjaro visibility conditions. The second morning uses this intelligence to position at the most photogenic elephant-Kilimanjaro combination point at the optimal light. The afternoon drives at Amboseli target the swamp edges where the elephants drink at dusk — the late golden light on the elephant families with the mountain above is Amboseli’s most celebrated photography window. Two nights is sufficient for the complete Amboseli experience — unlike the Serengeti or the Mara, Amboseli’s wildlife intelligence builds quickly due to the enclosed basin’s predictable elephant family routes.
Nairobi National Park is one of the world’s most extraordinary wildlife areas — a 117 square kilometre reserve within sight of Nairobi’s city skyline, holding lion, leopard, cheetah, rhino, buffalo, giraffe, and over 400 bird species within a 45-minute drive from the CBD. The park’s defining image is the wildlife with the Nairobi skyscrapers visible on the northern horizon — a visual juxtaposition unavailable anywhere else on Earth. RYDER Signature offers a Nairobi National Park morning game drive as the Day 1 activity for guests arriving the previous evening — an efficient use of the first morning before the afternoon fly to Amboseli. The park’s black rhinoceros population is one of Kenya’s most reliably encountered, and the half-day morning game drive consistently produces predator sightings. The Nairobi National Park option is available at booking as a supplement to KE-S2.

Four of the Big Five with high reliability. Elephant: Amboseli’s research-habituated families (Kenya’s most intimate elephant encounter). Lion: Mara resident prides across three intelligence-led nights. Leopard: Mara riverine forest (targeted afternoon positioning of known trees). Buffalo: large herds in both parks. Black rhinoceros: not reliably present in either Amboseli or the Mara. Adding Nairobi National Park (Day 1 supplement) provides black rhinoceros. For the complete Big Five within the main program, KE-S3 (Laikipia Conservancy includes rhino) or KE-S4 (adding Lake Nakuru’s rhino) are the recommended alternatives.

Amboseli HEL tier: Angama Amboseli — a newly opened luxury camp in the Kimana Wildlife Sanctuary adjacent to Amboseli, providing the Kilimanjaro view without the main park’s vehicle density; or Tortilis Camp — a classic Amboseli luxury property with direct mountain views and research-habituated elephant families daily. Maasai Mara HEL tier: Governors’ Il Moran — a small, intimate camp on the Mara River above the primary crossing zone, limited to 10 guests maximum, with private guiding and off-road access in the northern reserve. Both HEL tier properties provide a private guide dedicated to the single party, vehicle exclusivity, and activities (night drives, walking safaris) unavailable in the standard reserve format.
KE-S2 performs well year-round. July–October: the Mara migration crossing season — three Mara nights in the crossing zone during peak season provides the highest crossing probability available in a standard 7-day Kenya program; Amboseli’s dry season delivers the clearest Kilimanjaro views. January–February: the clearest Kilimanjaro visibility window at Amboseli (often clearer than the July–October window despite being the ‘short dry season’) combined with the Mara’s excellent resident wildlife in the green season. RYDER Signature positions the Mara nights in the north Mara area during July–October for crossing proximity and in the central Mara for the resident predator zone in other seasons.
KE-S2 is priced from USD 3,200 per person (MID tier) to USD 8,000 per person (LUX tier) and USD 16,500 per person (HEL tier), based on double occupancy. Included: domestic flights (Nairobi–Amboseli, Amboseli–Mara, Mara–Nairobi), Nairobi overnight hotel, private 4×4 and guide at each destination, 2 Amboseli nights plus 3 Mara nights, full board, Amboseli National Park fees, Maasai Mara Reserve fees and conservancy levies, and Flying Doctors coverage. International flights, Kenya ETA, and personal items are not included.
