What the Serengeti Is Known For

An Ecosystem, Not a Highlight Reel

On any given morning, cheetah hunt from termite mounds, prides rest beneath acacia shade, and a sea of wildebeest moves toward the horizon. This is the Serengeti's ordinary day, and it has defined the East African safari for generations.

The Great Migration

1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebra, and 300,000 gazelle complete a continuous annual circuit, the largest terrestrial mammal movement on Earth.

Predator Density

One of Africa's highest concentrations of lion, leopard, cheetah, and spotted hyena, alongside elephant, buffalo, giraffe, and 500+ bird species.

The Endless Plains

Siringet is Maasai for endless plains, a UNESCO World Heritage landscape of open savannah, kopjes, and woodland since 1981.

Serengeti National Park Overview

Three Sectors, Three Seasons of Wildlife

Tanzania's oldest protected area forms part of a 40,000 km² cross border ecosystem with Ngorongoro, Maswa, and Kenya's Maasai Mara, divided into three distinct sectors, each at its best in a different month.

Southern Serengeti

Ndutu and the Calving Plains

The migration's calving ground between December and March, drawing the year's highest concentration of predators to the open floodplains.

Central Serengeti

Seronera Valley

Year round resident wildlife along the Seronera River, the park's most accessible sector, renowned for resident leopard in the riverine trees.

Northern Serengeti

Kogatende and the Lamai Wedge

Stage for the dramatic Mara River crossings between July and October, and the park's most exclusive, least visited terrain.

Safari Highlights

Moments Defined by This Landscape

The Great Migration River Crossings Mara River, July to October
Highlight One

The Great Migration River Crossings

Thousands of wildebeest plunge into crocodile filled waters simultaneously, driven by instinct and herd momentum. Few wildlife encounters on Earth match this for sheer, raw intensity, and timing your visit to the northern sector between July and October gives the best statistical chance of witnessing it.

Year Round Big Cat Encounters Seronera Valley
Highlight Two

Year Round Big Cat Encounters

The Serengeti supports one of Africa's highest concentrations of lion, leopard, and cheetah. Seronera is particularly renowned for resident leopard in its riverine trees, with lion prides that can exceed thirty animals and open grassland visibility that rewards patient cheetah watching.

The Calving Season Spectacle Ndutu, January to February
Highlight Three

The Calving Season Spectacle

Between January and February, the Ndutu region hosts roughly 8,000 wildebeest calves born daily. The predators this draws, lion, cheetah, leopard, serval, hyena, jackal, and wild dog, create some of the most intense predator prey dynamics, and finest photography, of any season.

Kopje Wildlife Encounters Granite Kopjes
Highlight Four

Kopje Wildlife Encounters

Ancient granite outcroppings scattered across the plains support their own micro ecosystems, rock hyrax colonies, klipspringer antelope, leopard denning sites, and lion prides using the elevated vantage to survey the surrounding grassland.

Hot Air Balloon Safaris Dawn Flight
Highlight Five

Hot Air Balloon Safaris

Floating silently above the plains at dawn as the rising sun illuminates the landscape below is one of East Africa's definitive luxury experiences, typically concluding with a champagne bush breakfast on the open plains.

Exceptional Birdlife Year Round, 500+ Species
Highlight Six

Exceptional Birdlife

More than 500 recorded species make the Serengeti a year round birding destination. The arrival of European and Palearctic migrants between November and April significantly expands the list, look for secretary bird, kori bustard, lilac breasted roller, and the region's endemic Fischer's lovebird.

African Wild Dog Sightings Not Guaranteed, Always Worth Seeking
Highlight Seven

African Wild Dog Sightings

While never guaranteed, the Serengeti supports a population of African wild dog, one of the continent's most endangered large carnivores and among the most exciting of all predator sightings. Our guides track known territories and den sites to maximise the possibility of an encounter.

Things to See and Do

How You'll Spend Your Days

Game Drives

The Serengeti’s open grassland terrain makes it one of the finest game drive destinations in Africa. RYDER Signature conducts every drive in a private, customised vehicle, maximum six guests, typically two to four, with guides licensed by the Tanzania Tourist Guide Board.

Morning drives before sunrise offer the best predator activity; afternoon drives extend into the golden hour. Full day drives with a packed lunch reach the far north, rewarding the extra travel time with a markedly more exclusive experience.

Walking Safaris

Guided walks, accompanied by an armed TANAPA ranger and our specialist guide, are conducted outside park boundaries, from camps on the western or northern fringes or in Ngorongoro’s designated walking zones.

The focus shifts from large mammals to the finer detail of the bush: tracking, insect ecology, plant identification, and a sensory engagement with the landscape that a vehicle cannot offer.

Bird Watching

Over 500 recorded species make the Serengeti a year round birding destination. Seronera’s riverine forest holds kingfisher species, African fish eagle, and martial eagle; the plains hold secretary bird, kori bustard, and ground hornbill.

Visiting between November and April, when Palearctic migrants are present, can deliver a species list exceeding 200 in a single week.

Night Drives

Available from camps in private conservancies bordering the park, night drives reveal species invisible by day, serval, African civet, spring hare, genet, and bushbaby, along with Verreaux’s eagle owl and African barn owl.

Availability varies by camp and should be requested at the itinerary planning stage.

Cultural Visits

Several community owned conservancies border the Serengeti’s western and southern edges. Our visits are genuine interactions with Maasai families, informed by our founder’s own Maasai heritage, approached with respect and an understanding of their complexity, not staged for tourism.

Photography Opportunities

Open terrain and exceptional light have made the Serengeti one of the world’s defining photography destinations for over a century. We offer roof hatch vehicles and full day drives configured around light quality, best discussed at the planning stage for serious photographic intent.

The Migration Calendar

A Circuit With No Beginning or End

The herds do not migrate in a straight line, they move in a continuous, roughly annual circuit around the ecosystem. This is where they typically stand each month.

Great Migration calendar by month

Peak Season

Dry Season, June to October

Minimal rainfall, moderate temperatures, and thinning vegetation make wildlife easier to locate. By July the herds reach the Mara River and the crossings begin, the premium window for river crossing sightings, busiest July through September.

Often Overlooked

Green Season, November to May

Vivid landscapes, dramatic light, and January to February calving in Ndutu, regarded by many wildlife experts as the single most extraordinary event in the park. Lower rates, fewer vehicles, and a genuine sense of wilderness.

Location and Access

Getting to Serengeti National Park

By Air

Scheduled Coastal Aviation flights and private charters connect Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and Arusha to airstrips across the park. Charter access offers the greatest routing flexibility, reaching northern or southern airstrips directly without intermediate stops. Seasonal closures can occur during the April to May long rains; our team tracks these and adjusts routing accordingly.

  • SeroneraCentral hub
  • KogatendeNorthern / Lamai Wedge
  • NdutuSouthern / calving season
  • GrumetiWestern corridor
  • Fort IkomaWestern corridor camps
By Road

The drive from Arusha to Seronera passes through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area via Lodoare Gate, scenic, and worthwhile for guests combining a Ngorongoro visit, particularly in the dry season when road conditions are most reliable.

The northern Serengeti adds a further 4 to 5 hours from Seronera, making road based access practical only for stays of four nights or more. For shorter northern stays, we strongly recommend flying directly into Kogatende to preserve wildlife time.

History, People and Culture
“Siringet, the Maasai word for endless plains, is not a description travellers invented. It is the name the land has always carried.”
The Origin of the Serengeti's Name

The Serengeti’s human history is inseparable from that of the Maasai, whose semi nomadic pastoral presence has shaped the ecosystem for centuries. When the park was gazetted in 1951, it required the relocation of Maasai communities from within its boundaries, a difficult chapter that continues to inform conservation debate today.

The park’s scientific history is equally significant. Since the 1950s it has been one of the world’s most intensively studied ecosystems, providing foundational research in predator prey dynamics, migration ecology, and large mammal behaviour. The Serengeti Research Institute, established in 1966, continues this tradition, hosting decades long field studies from some of the world’s most respected wildlife biologists.

RYDER Signature’s founder carries authentic Maasai heritage, and our community conservancy visits are organised in partnership with, and directed by, Maasai community leaders, ensuring economic benefit flows directly to the families involved.

Conservation and Ecosystem

Protecting a Fully Functioning Wild System

The Serengeti ecosystem is maintained by the interlocking pressures of fire, rainfall, and the grazing intensity of the migration herds, supporting a food web spanning decomposers, insects, small mammals, birds, and megafauna that has remained largely intact for millennia. It is managed by the Tanzania National Parks Authority (TANAPA) under the Wildlife Conservation Act, and its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Man and Biosphere Reserve, both designated in 1981, reflects its outstanding universal ecological value.

Community conservation is an increasingly critical part of the Serengeti’s long term protection. The park is surrounded by community wildlife management areas, where local communities receive direct economic benefit from wildlife tourism in exchange for protecting corridors and reducing human wildlife conflict. RYDER Signature supports these conservancy economies through our itinerary design and community visit programs, and every guest contributes directly through conservation levies included in park fees.

Yes, one of our most popular itineraries, particularly during migration season. The journey between parks is made by a short charter flight across the Kenya Tanzania border, typically around 45 minutes.

The most efficient route is by scheduled Coastal Aviation flight from Arusha Airport, approximately 45 to 60 minutes to Seronera Airstrip, with connections from Kilimanjaro International Airport. Charter flights offer direct access to any open airstrip within or adjacent to the park. Road transfer from Arusha takes approximately 5 to 7 hours via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and is best combined with a Ngorongoro visit.
