6-Day Amboseli & Maasai Mara Fly-Drive Safari: Most iconic destinations in Kenya

Departure after breakfast for the four-hour road drive to Amboseli National Park, passing through the Athi-Kapiti plains wildlife corridor and the agricultural belt south of Nairobi. The Kilimanjaro massif becomes visible approximately 100 kilometres from the park boundary — at first just a vague white shape above the horizon, then increasingly defined as you approach. Arrival at camp allows the afternoon game drive in Amboseli’s open basin.

The afternoon drive introduces the Amboseli experience: enormous elephant herds moving across the dry lake bed, family groups coming to the swamps to drink, the enormous tusked bulls who are among the most photographed animals in Africa. A sundowner position chosen for the mountain light at dusk closes the afternoon — Kilimanjaro at sunset, with the acacia silhouettes and the last elephant dust clouds rising, is one of Kenya’s defining images.

Dawn drive — the optimal Kilimanjaro window opens at first light. The elephants emerge from overnight in the scrub to drink at the swamps, the mountain behind them clear of cloud. Amboseli’s research-habituated elephant families allow vehicle observation at intimately close range — individual personalities, calf behaviour, and the matriarch’s decision-making are visible in a way that no other elephant destination in Africa delivers.

The afternoon drive explores the swamp system, the dry lake bed, and the southern acacia scrub for lion, cheetah, and the buffalo herds that use the permanent water. The second Kilimanjaro viewing window opens briefly in the late afternoon as cloud thins before sunset. A final Amboseli sundowner closes Day 3 before the preparation for tomorrow’s flight to the Maasai Mara.

The 75-minute flight crosses the Rift Valley escarpment — the transition from Amboseli’s volcanic grey-green landscape to the Mara’s red-oat grassland visible from the aircraft window as a complete ecological shift. The Mara afternoon reveals a completely different Kenya from Amboseli: denser wildlife density, more open grassland, the possibility of lion prides in the open, cheetah on termite mounds, and the Mara River in the distance. The two parks complement rather than duplicate each other — the Amboseli experience has deepened the context for everything the Mara will show over the next two nights.

A full day in the Maasai Mara. Dawn drive at 06:00 targeting the resident lion prides and the cheetah territories in the open grassland south of the Mara River. By the second morning in the Mara, your guide’s intelligence map includes yesterday afternoon’s sightings — the cheetah female’s current position, the pride’s most recent kill location, the leopard’s favoured afternoon tree.

The afternoon drive continues the morning’s program through the golden hour. The optional hot air balloon  added to Day 5 morning for guests who pre-booked  replaces the dawn drive with an hour above the plains at first light, followed by the champagne bush breakfast. Evening sundowner in the field closes the last full safari day.

A final morning game drive in the Maasai Mara deploys five days of accumulated safari intelligence for the program’s final encounters. The dawn in the Mara on a departure day has a particular quality  the last observation before the airstrip transfer and the flight to Nairobi.
