Summit Africa's Second Peak then the Maasai Mara

KE-G3 combines the physical achievement of Mount Kenya's Point Lenana summit (4,985 metres, Africa's second-highest trekker-accessible peak) with a recovery day at Ol Pejeta's Northern White Rhino sanctuary and four nights in the Maasai Mara. It is the most complete Kenya adventure program — summit, conservation encounter, and four nights of open-plains wildlife immersion — structured to give each element its proper time and emotional weight.

The mountain program uses the Naro Moru route, the most direct of Kenya’s three main summit approaches — four days from the base camp to Point Lenana and back. Ol Pejeta on Day 6 is specifically placed as the recovery day: gentle game drives, hot showers, good food, and the NWR encounter that uses the post-summit emotional receptivity at its peak. The Mara’s four nights then close the program with the depth and intelligence-led precision that the Mara rewards when given time.

Your Journey, Day by Day

Day1

Arrival

Arrive Nairobi: The Mountain Beckons

RYDER Signature meets you at JKIA and transfers you to your Nairobi hotel. The arrival briefing is more detailed than a standard safari briefing — the mountain program requires equipment confirmation, gear check, and the altitude acclimatisation schedule. Your RYDER Signature mountain guide joins the briefing to walk through the Naro Moru route, the daily distances and altitude gains, the summit push timing, and the descent schedule.

Gear check confirms packing against the mountain equipment list sent at booking. Items available for hire in Nairobi are identified and sourced if needed. The briefing closes with weather forecasts and current mountain conditions from the field team. By the end of the evening, the mountain ascent is mapped specifically and the anticipation is precise.

Day2

Drive to Base

Nairobi → Mount Kenya: The Approach

Departure for the three-hour road drive to the Naro Moru base area on Mount Kenya’s western flank. The road climbs through Central Province farmland, the mountain’s forested lower slopes becoming visible above the agricultural belt. Arrival at the base accommodation allows an afternoon acclimatisation walk — a gentle two-hour circuit through montane forest at 2,200–2,400 metres, introducing the altitude to the body without overtaxing it.

The evening briefing at base camp finalises the departure time, the porter assignments, and the route for tomorrow’s ascent. The mountain team — guide, cook, porters — is assembled and introduced. The acclimatisation walk’s impact is already apparent: the altitude of Naro Moru base is higher than any point in Europe west of the Alps, and the body’s adjustment to altitude begins here.

Day3

Met Station

Ascent to Met Station (3,050 m)

The trek begins at dawn from the base camp, entering the bamboo forest zone through the park gate. The path climbs steadily through the forest — giant podocarpus trees draped in old man’s beard lichen, sunbirds calling from the canopy, elephant tracks crossing the trail. The bamboo gives way to the Hagenia woodland zone at higher altitude before the moorland opens ahead and the Met Station huts appear.

The Met Station at 3,050 metres is the first mountain camp — a cluster of corrugated iron huts with a wooden sleeping platform and a cook’s hut. The afternoon is rest and acclimatisation at this altitude. The guide explains the altitude physiology: what the body is doing overnight, what to monitor, and what the following day’s ascent to Mackinder’s Camp will require.

Day4

Mackinder's Camp

Ascent to Mackinder's Camp (4,200 m)

The hardest trekking day of the ascent — a 1,150 metre altitude gain across the Teleki Valley and the high moorland above the forest zone. The landscape above the tree line is one of Africa’s most extraordinary: giant lobelias and groundsels (plants that grow nowhere else on Earth) reach three to four metres across the open moorland, the rocks are encrusted with ancient lichens, and the silence above the valley is absolute. The route crosses the Naro Moru stream and climbs toward the Lewis Glacier.

Arrival at Mackinder’s Camp at 4,200 metres — the highest hut on the Naro Moru route and the base for tomorrow’s summit push. The altitude here exceeds the highest point in the Alps. The mountain cook prepares dinner at altitude and the briefing for tomorrow’s 02:00 summit departure covers the route, the expected conditions, and the turnaround time protocols.

Day5

Summit

Summit Point Lenana (4,985 m) → Descent → Nairobi

Departure from Mackinder’s Camp at 02:00 — headtorches on, the mountain guide ahead on the trail. The summit push follows the loose scree path above the Lewis Glacier to the base of Point Lenana, the final section a steep scramble to the summit cairn. First light arrives as you approach the summit — the sky above the eastern horizon turning from black to deep blue to the first gold. At 4,985 metres, the panorama opens: Batian and Nelion’s rock spires immediately above, the Rift Valley below the western horizon, and on the clearest mornings, the white dome of Kilimanjaro rising above the southern horizon.

The descent follows the same route, arriving back at Mackinder’s Camp for breakfast before the long descent to the base camp. The mountain team breaks camp efficiently; the porters are already moving down. Arrival at base camp allows hot showers before the road transfer to Nairobi for the overnight hotel stay. The summit achievement is still vivid as the city lights appear below the mountain’s evening silhouette.

Day6

Recovery

Nairobi → Ol Pejeta: Rest, Rhino, Recovery

Recovery day begins late — the summit and descent leave legs and lungs grateful for a slower morning. After breakfast in Nairobi, the drive north to Ol Pejeta Conservancy (45 minutes) delivers the program’s transition from mountain to safari. The afternoon game drive at Ol Pejeta is explicitly gentle — a flat, open conservancy drive with no altitude, no scrambling, and the satisfaction of watching wildlife from a comfortable vehicle.

The Northern White Rhinoceros encounter at Ol Pejeta is specifically placed on the recovery day: the summit achievement is still fresh, and the NWR encounter’s emotional weight lands on a day when the body and mind are in a reflective state. The ranger who cares for Najin and Fatu guides the visit personally. A night drive (HEL tier) closes the first safari evening.

Day7

Fly to Mara

Ol Pejeta ✈ Maasai Mara: The Plains Open

Morning game drive at Ol Pejeta — the second day in the conservancy, the body fully recovered from the summit. The black rhino programme or chimpanzee sanctuary visit can be arranged for the morning before the airstrip transfer for the 60-minute flight to the Maasai Mara.

Arrival at the Mara and the first game drive begins. The transition from the mountain ecosystem to the open grassland is one of Kenya’s most complete ecological shifts — from 4,985-metre summit to 1,500-metre savannah, from alpine desert to tropical grass. The Mara announces itself: lion visible from the camp access road, the Mara River audible from the tent. Four nights ahead.

Day8

Full Mara

Full Day: The Mara at Full Expression

First full day in the Maasai Mara. Dawn at 06:00 — the overnight intelligence deployed. The guide targets the resident lion prides, the cheetah female’s morning patrol, and the riverine leopard along the Mara and Talek. The full day covers both drives with the golden hour sundowner closing the afternoon.

Bush breakfast at the Signature and Pinnacle tiers on Day 8 morning. The post-mountain body is fully adapted to safari pace by Day 8 — the physical achievement of Point Lenana and the wildlife encounters of the past three days combine into a richness of experience that a purely safari program cannot produce.

Day9

Second Mara

The Mara Deepens

Second full day in the Mara. The guide’s intelligence map from yesterday’s drives is deployed with precision — the specific pride territories, the cheetah’s circuit, the leopard’s tree. The morning balloon option (pre-booked) provides the aerial perspective on the open plains before the afternoon drive continues.

The evening sundowner closes the penultimate full day of the program. The accumulated experience of eleven days — mountain preparation, summit, recovery, conservancy, Mara immersion — has a completeness that single-format programs cannot replicate.

Second Mara Day ★ Balloon Optional Targeted Drives Sundowner
Day10

Final Mara

Last Full Day: All Intelligence Applied

The final full Mara day deploys four days of Mara intelligence for the program’s most precisely targeted game drives. Dawn drive at 06:00, the guide visiting the highest-probability positions one last time with fresh overnight intelligence.

A farewell sundowner in the field closes the last evening of KE-G3 — drinks on the open Mara plains, the mountain visible on the northern horizon on clear days, the complete arc of eleven days from gear check to summit to grassland vivid in the memory.

Final Full Day All Intelligence Farewell Sundowner
Day11

Fly-Out

Morning Drive → Maasai Mara ✈ Nairobi

Final morning game drive before the airstrip transfer. The Mara at dawn on a departure day has a particular quality — the knowledge that this specific light and this specific grassland will not be repeated. The guide heads to the most productive positions one final time.

Morning flight to Nairobi Wilson Airport, arriving before noon. RYDER Signature transfers to JKIA for international departures. KE-G3 delivers the complete Kenya adventure — Africa’s second-highest peak, conservancy wildlife, and the Maasai Mara’s open grandeur — in eleven extraordinary days.

Frequently Asked Questions

Point Lenana (4,985 metres) is reached via the Naro Moru or Sirimon Route in 4–5 days of trekking — no technical climbing skills, ropes, or specialist equipment required. The route gains approximately 2,000 metres from the park gate, on well-defined trails through montane forest, bamboo, Hagenia woodland, and moorland before the final alpine zone. The physical demand is sustained rather than technically challenging: the key difficulty is the altitude gain, which produces acute mountain sickness (AMS) symptoms for a significant proportion of trekkers. RYDER Signature recommends good cardiovascular fitness — sustained hiking or equivalent for 3 months before the attempt — and a pre-trip consultation with a travel medicine physician for diamox (acetazolamide) assessment. The summit push departs at approximately 02:00 from Austrian Hut or Mackinder’s Camp, reaching Point Lenana at dawn. A reasonable fitness level and genuine altitude preparation delivers a high success rate.
Point Lenana at 4,985 metres is a rocky summit on Mount Kenya’s Southeast Ridge — approached via the Lewis Glacier margin on the final push and reached at a rocky viewpoint overlooking the main peaks of Batian (5,199m) and Nelion (5,188m) above. The technical summits (Batian and Nelion) are genuine rock climbing objectives requiring technical skills; Point Lenana is the walker’s summit. Compared to Kilimanjaro: Kilimanjaro (5,895m) is higher, with a gradual volcanic slope, a more dramatic glaciated summit crater, and a more straightforward final approach. Mount Kenya is technically more interesting — the rock ridge approach, the Lewis Glacier, and the view of the true summits above Point Lenana — but the maximum altitude is 910 metres lower. For guests who have previously attempted Kilimanjaro, Mount Kenya provides a different and more intimate summit experience; for first-time high-altitude trekkers, Kilimanjaro’s approach is more predictable and better acclimatised across its 6-day route.
The Ol Pejeta overnight between Mount Kenya and the Maasai Mara is a deliberate three-purpose stop. First, recovery: the body after a 4–5 day mountain ascent is dehydrated, muscle-fatigued, and altitude-stressed. Ol Pejeta’s 1,700-metre elevation provides gentle decompression at a comfortable altitude without the immediate low-altitude sensory overload that Nairobi would produce. Second, wildlife: the Ol Pejeta game drive and the Northern White Rhino encounter provide the first post-summit wildlife — the research shows that post-altitude perception enhancement applies to wildlife encounters as well as to physical sensations. Third, logistics: Ol Pejeta is positioned directly on the route between Nanyuki (Mount Kenya’s main town gateway) and the Maasai Mara domestic flight connection, making it an efficient geographic transition rather than a detour.
The Mount Kenya afro-alpine zone above 3,500 metres is one of Africa’s most otherworldly landscapes. Giant lobelias (Lobelia telekii) — standing 3–5 metres, their tubular flower spikes rising from the moorland — are the zone’s most distinctive plant. Giant groundsels (Dendrosenecio keniensis) — tree-sized, with a rosette of succulent leaves at the top of a thick trunk — grow in valley-bottom groves. The landscape above 4,000 metres transitions to rock, scree, and the Lewis Glacier’s ice. Wildlife in the afro-alpine zone: rock hyrax is everywhere on the rocky outcrops; the distinctive sunbird species (Eastern double-collared sunbird, Malachite sunbird) feed on the lobelia flowers; eland graze the moorland edges; and leopard occasionally move through the higher altitude zones at night. The specific ecology of each altitude band — forest, bamboo, Hagenia, heath, moorland, rock — is the guide’s narrative through the five-day ascent.
The post-altitude Mara game drive carries the same perception enhancement phenomenon documented in all RYDER Signature Mountain + Safari programs. After four days on Mount Kenya’s rock, altitude, and physical demand, the Mara’s warmth, colour, and wildlife density arrive as a complete sensory transition. The lion pride encountered on the first Mara morning after the summit is experienced with a vividness — each detail vivid, each behaviour noticed — that the standard safari guest does not typically access. The phenomenon is consistent across guest reports: post-summit wildlife encounters feel more immediate, more personally significant, and more sharply observed than wildlife encountered without the altitude context. Three Mara nights allows the intelligence progression (Day 1 discovers, Day 2 deploys, Day 3 achieves precision) that maximises the quality of the post-summit encounters.
Mount Kenya’s ascent uses the Kenya Wildlife Service hut system supplemented by RYDER Signature’s tented camp equipment where hut availability is limited. Naro Moru Route: Meteorological Station (3,050m), Mackinder’s Camp / Top Hut (4,200m), Austrian Hut (4,790m, summit prep camp). Sirimon Route: Judmaier Hut (3,300m), Old Moses Hut (3,300m), Shipton’s Camp (4,200m), and Point Lenana summit camp. The huts provide a roof and bunk spaces; RYDER Signature provides sleeping bags, mattress pads, and a full cook team for meals at each camp. At LUX and HEL tiers, supplementary tented accommodation at the lower camps is provided for guests who prefer a private sleeping environment. The Nanyuki hotel nights (pre-mountain and post-descent recovery) use The Sportsman’s Arms (LUX) or Batian Grand Hotel (HEL).
Mount Kenya National Park is managed by Kenya Wildlife Service and requires a park entry fee (daily rate, applicable for each day on the mountain, approximately USD 52 per person per day) plus a mandatory KWS guide fee for the summit attempt. RYDER Signature includes all KWS fees, the mandatory park guide, and the porter team in the program price. The KWS mandatory guide operates alongside RYDER Signature’s specialist mountain guide — the two-guide system is standard on all RYDER Signature mountain programs for both safety and experience quality. Rescue fee insurance (mandatory) is approximately USD 20 per person; Flying Doctors emergency evacuation coverage is included in the program price.
KE-G3 is priced from USD 6,500 per person (LUX tier) and USD 13,000 per person (HEL tier), based on double occupancy. KE-G3 is offered at LUX and HEL tiers only. Included: all domestic flights (Nairobi–Nanyuki area, Nanyuki–Mara, Mara–Nairobi), Nanyuki hotel nights pre and post mountain, mountain guide and porter team, mountain cook and full camp equipment, KWS park fees and mandatory guide, Ol Pejeta overnight and activities (NWR encounter, Sweetwaters visit), private 4×4 and guide for the Mara, 3 Mara nights, full board throughout, all park fees, and Flying Doctors coverage. International flights, Kenya ETA, personal trekking gear, and high-altitude trekking insurance are not included.
