Western Signature  ·  Katavi + Mahale
📍 Departs from Kilimanjaro International Airport

Hippo Pools, Walking Safaris, and Chimpanzees on the Lake.

The 9-day Mahale and Katavi Combination is the Western Circuit's definitive pairing — Tanzania's most remote game park followed by its most extraordinary primate trekking destination, connected by a scenic inter-park charter over Lake Tanganyika.

Katavi opens the program with two nights in the dry-season hippo pool landscape — the complete solitude of Africa’s least-visited major park, the extraordinary concentration of hippos and their attendant predators, and a walking safari in miombo woodland of total wildness. The inter-park charter then delivers the program to Mahale for two chimpanzee trekking days on Lake Tanganyika’s shore.

The two parks complement each other perfectly — game safari and primate trekking, open plain and mountain forest, dramatic and intimate. Together they represent the Western Circuit’s essential character in the most efficient program available.

Tanzania’s greatest and least-known wildlife spectacle — thousands of hippos in dry-season pools with lions and crocodiles surrounding them.

Two trekking days with one of Tanzania’s best-habituated chimpanzee communities — close-range encounters on the shore of Lake Tanganyika.

The world’s second-deepest lake — crystal clear, warm, surrounded by mountain forest.

Katavi to Mahale — the lake visible below as the plane descends toward the forest-covered mountains.

Game safari + primate trekking + lake — the three defining dimensions of the Western Circuit in a single week.

Back-to-back — Katavi and Mahale receive fewer visitors combined per year than the Serengeti receives in a single day.

Your Journey, Day by Day

Day1

Day 1 — Arrival Night

Arrive Dar es Salaam — Overnight Hotel

Your RYDER Signature guide meets you at Julius Nyerere International Airport and transfers you to your Dar es Salaam hotel. All departures from Dar es Salaam to the Western Circuit use Air Tanzania to the relevant airport — no charter flights and no airstrips are used from Dar es Salaam. Tomorrow’s 08:40 Air Tanzania flight to Mpanda is the sole daily service for the Katavi connection.

The evening briefing maps the 9-day program. The circuit opens with Katavi — intentionally first because Mpanda Airport has less schedule certainty than Kigoma, and placing it at the programme’s start avoids uncertainty cascading into the Mahale and departure legs. The inter-park charter between Katavi and Mahale (via Ikuu and Mahale airstrips, in 8-seat or 12-seat aircraft) operates June to October only.

Dar es Salaam Arrival Night Katavi First Briefing
Day2

Day 2 — Katavi Arrival

Air Tanzania 08:40 DAR → Mpanda → 2hr Road → Katavi

Air Tanzania departs Dar es Salaam at 08:40 for Mpanda Airport — approximately 1.5 hours. Mpanda Airport is active but has less daily traffic than Kigoma, which is why the programme starts here rather than finishing here. From Mpanda Airport, a 2-hour road transfer through the western miombo woodland delivers you to the Katavi camp area by approximately 12:30 PM. Afternoon game drive begins on arrival.

The Katuma River hippo pool in the dry season is one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles in Africa — 200 to 400 hippos concentrated in a single pool as surrounding water sources dry. The near-total absence of other vehicles at Katavi is apparent from the first drive. The lion prides that follow the Katavi buffalo herds across the dry-season plain are the afternoon’s second target.

Air Tanzania 08:40 Mpanda Airport 2hr Road → Katavi Arrival Drive First Hippo Pool
Day3

Day 3 — Full Katavi

Full Day — Hippo Pools, Game Drives and Walking Safari

Full Katavi day across two extended game drives. The dawn drive at 06:00 targets the buffalo herd’s overnight position and the lion prides following them. Katavi’s lions specialise in buffalo hunting — different prey, different hunting strategies, and different pride behaviour from the northern circuit’s lion populations. The Katuma River at dawn holds the hippos at their most vocal, the territorial calls carrying across the plain in the early silence.

The armed ranger walking safari in the afternoon is the Katavi programme’s highest-intimacy wildlife experience — sandbank tracking on the Katumi River, approaching the hippo pool on foot, and experiencing the Katavi plain’s specific wildness at ground level. The park’s complete absence of tourist infrastructure makes every encounter feel unmediated.

Day4

Day 4 — Full Katavi

Second Full Day — Intelligence at Maximum

Second full Katavi day deploying the accumulated field intelligence of Days 2 and 3. The guide knows the buffalo herd’s current range, the lion pride’s confirmed territory, and the hippo pool’s most productive viewing positions by time of day. The morning drive uses this knowledge to produce the most precisely targeted Katavi drives of the programme.

A second walking safari on different terrain from Day 3’s walk extends the ground-level wildlife engagement. The Katavi plain at dusk — the buffalo dust on the horizon, the lion calls beginning in the gathering dark — closes the programme’s final Katavi evening. Tomorrow the inter-park charter transitions the programme to Mahale’s completely different world.

Day5

Day 5 — Transit: Katavi to Mahale

Katavi → 2hr Road → Ikuu Airstrip → Charter → Mahale Airstrip → 2hr Boat → Mahale

Morning departure from Katavi camp for the 2-hour road transfer to Ikuu airstrip. The inter-park charter (operating June–October only, 8 or 12-seat aircraft) flies from Ikuu across the western Rift Valley to Mahale airstrip on Lake Tanganyika’s western shore — approximately 45 minutes. From Mahale airstrip, the camp’s boat transfer covers the 2-hour crossing to Mahale Mountains camp, arriving by early afternoon.

The landscape transition on this day is total — from the flat, open Katavi plain to the forest-edged lake shore, from the large-mammal scale of the hippo pool to the intimacy of a forest camp accessible only by water. The research team briefing in the afternoon introduces the M Group’s current range and the chimpanzee trekking protocols. No prior experience with primates is needed — the guide provides the complete framework.

2hr Road → Ikuu Charter (Jun–Oct) Mahale Airstrip 2hr Camp Boat Mahale Arrival Research Briefing
Day6

Day 6 — First Trek

Full Day — First Chimpanzee Trek

First chimpanzee trekking day at Mahale. The dawn tracker briefing, the trek through the montane forest following the M Group’s overnight position, and the one-hour observation window open the chimpanzee chapter of the programme. After three days of open-plain megafauna at Katavi, the scale shift to primate contact in a closed forest canopy is complete and immediate.

The afternoon is spent on Lake Tanganyika — snorkelling over the rocky shallows where Mahale’s endemic cichlid fish community offers a completely different ecosystem encounter from both the morning’s forest and the previous days’ savanna. The lake’s exceptional clarity and the 200+ endemic cichlid species make the afternoon snorkel one of the most distinctive ecological transitions available in a single day.

First Trek 1hr M Group Contact Katavi Contrast Lake Tanganyika Snorkel
Day7

Day 7 — Second Trek

Full Day — Second Trek and Lake Activities

Second Mahale trekking day. The second contact deploys yesterday’s community intelligence — individual animals recognised, social dynamics building context. The guide’s accumulated knowledge of each chimpanzee by name enriches the observation with a narrative framework unavailable to first-time visitors. The one-hour contact window deepens the encounter: behaviours observed on Day 6 become familiar rather than startling.

A final lake sundowner cruise along the Mahale Mountains’ shore closes the last full evening — the mountains at golden hour from the research vessel, the forest sounds carrying across the calm lake surface. The 10:00 AM boat tomorrow begins the return. The guide confirms the early departure logistics for Day 8.

Second Trek 1hr Contact Deep Forest Final Lake Sundowner
Day8

Day 8 — Kigoma Hilltop

Mahale → 10:00 AM Boat → 5hr Road → Kigoma Hilltop (Mandatory Overnight)

The 10:00 AM boat departs Mahale camp — the only daily service — and the 2-hour crossing arrives at Lagosa port by 12:00 PM. The 5-hour road north to Kigoma delivers you to the Kigoma Hilltop Hotel by approximately 17:00. The Kigoma Hilltop overnight is mandatory on all Mahale departures — the timing of the boat and road makes a same-day airport connection logistically unreliable. Both LUX and HEL guests use Kigoma Hilltop for this operational night.

The programme’s return routing naturally uses two different airports — arrival via Mpanda Airport (Katavi side) and departure via Kigoma Airport (Mahale side). Both are Air Tanzania services from Dar es Salaam. The Kigoma Hilltop Hotel’s proximity to the airport makes tomorrow’s departure simple and relaxed.

10:00 AM Boat Lagosa 12:00 5hr Road to Kigoma Kigoma Hilltop Mandatory Overnight
Day9

Day 9 — Departure

Kigoma → Air Tanzania → Dar es Salaam

Air Tanzania operates the Kigoma–Dar es Salaam service at 08:40 and 17:40 (day of departure confirmed at booking). The Kigoma Hilltop Hotel is a few minutes from the airport. The return flight (approximately 1.5 hours) closes the programme at Julius Nyerere International Airport.

The 9-Day Katavi and Mahale Safari closes having moved through two completely different categories of East African wildlife experience: Katavi’s open-plain megafauna — buffalo herds followed by specialist lion prides, 300 hippos in a single pool — and Mahale’s forest intimacy — individual chimpanzees known by name in one of Africa’s oldest continuous primate research sites. The two experiences are not comparable; their juxtaposition in nine days is what makes the programme exceptional.

Frequently Asked Questions

RYDER Signature places Katavi first in all programs that combine Katavi with any other western destination. The reason is operational: Katavi is reached via Mpanda Airport, and Mpanda Airport has less schedule certainty than Kigoma Airport. By starting at Katavi, any schedule uncertainty at Mpanda sits at the beginning of the trip rather than at the end — where a delayed or cancelled Mpanda flight would affect the departure home. The program ends at Kigoma Airport (after the Mahale departure), which has a guaranteed daily service and is operationally more reliable for the final flight home. The wildlife logic also works in favour of this sequence: the open-plain megafauna spectacle of Katavi provides a powerful safari foundation, and the transition from Katavi’s scale and drama to Mahale’s forest intimacy is one of East Africa’s most satisfying single sensory contrasts.
The inter-park transfer between Katavi and Mahale uses a small charter flight (8-seater or 12-seater aircraft) operating between two bush airstrips. From Katavi, a 2-hour road transfer reaches Ikuu airstrip. The charter flight crosses the western Rift Valley to Mahale airstrip on Lake Tanganyika’s western shore — approximately 45 minutes in the air. From Mahale airstrip, a 2-hour boat transfer along the forest coastline delivers you to Mahale Mountains camp. This inter-park charter operates June to October only — outside this window, road transfer alternatives apply and RYDER Signature will provide an updated quote based on road logistics.
The inter-park charter between Katavi (Ikuu airstrip) and Mahale (Mahale airstrip) operates June to October only, in 8-seat or 12-seat aircraft. This corresponds with the recommended season for the Western Circuit (15 June to early November). Outside this period — November to May — the charter is not available and overland road transfer alternatives apply. For guests visiting between November and May, RYDER Signature will design a revised routing based on road connections and will provide an updated itinerary and quote. The program is available December to March upon request, subject to road and camp availability.
The 9-Day Katavi and Mahale program includes two full chimpanzee trekking days at Mahale — two separate one-hour contact sessions with the M Group community, giving two hours of total contact time. Each session is on consecutive days, allowing the second contact to deploy the previous day’s individual recognition. For guests who want more trekking days, the TW-E1 (7 days, three treks), TW-E2 (8 days, four treks), TW-G1 (11 days, Katavi + two Mahale treks + two Gombe treks), and TW-G2 (13 days, Katavi + three Mahale treks + three Gombe treks) all offer extended primate contact. Two days is RYDER Signature’s minimum for a meaningful Mahale contact — one day provides a single encounter with no comparative depth.
The physical demands of TW-S1 are moderate overall. Katavi’s game drives are seated in a 4×4 vehicle; the walking safari involves 2–4 hours of flat or gently undulating walking on sandbanks and escarpment trails, with an armed ranger. No extreme fitness is required for the Katavi component. The Mahale chimpanzee trekking is the more demanding element: two trekking days in montane forest where the walk to contact can range from 30 minutes to 3–4 hours depending on the community’s movements. Good base fitness, ankle-support walking boots, and the ability to move at a pace set by the guide through dense undergrowth is the requirement. The program’s two-environment structure means guests who find the trekking demanding can enjoy the Katavi game drive and walking safari component independently of the forest component.
Departure from Mahale uses the 10:00 AM boat (the only daily service) from Mahale camp to Lagosa port — a 2-hour crossing arriving at 12:00 PM. The 5-hour road north from Lagosa to Kigoma reaches the Kigoma Hilltop Hotel by approximately 17:00. The Kigoma Hilltop overnight is mandatory on all Mahale departures because the boat-and-road timing makes the 17:40 Air Tanzania flight from Kigoma logistically unreliable. The following morning, Air Tanzania departs Kigoma for Dar es Salaam at 08:40 or 17:40 (service confirmed at booking). The program arrives at Dar es Salaam via Kigoma Airport — a different airport from the arrival (Mpanda) — reflecting the two-park circuit’s geography.
June to October is the optimal window. At Katavi, the dry season concentrates hippos in the Katuma River pool and dries the game drive circuits to accessible condition — August and September are the peak hippo concentration months. At Mahale, the dry season produces shorter, less demanding treks (the chimpanzees spend more time in the lower forest) and the best lake conditions for swimming and snorkelling. The inter-park charter between Ikuu and Mahale airstrips operates June to October only, making this window the operational prerequisite for this specific program. RYDER Signature recommends booking the June–October window and is happy to advise on optimal specific dates based on current wildlife conditions.
The 9-Day Katavi and Mahale Combination is priced from USD 5,200 per person (Signature/LUX tier), USD 9,800 per person (Luxury+), and USD 13,500 per person (Pinnacle/HEL tier), based on double occupancy. The price includes Air Tanzania domestic flights (DAR–Mpanda and Kigoma–DAR), the inter-park charter (Ikuu–Mahale airstrip, June–October), road and boat transfers, all accommodation for 8 nights including the Kigoma Hilltop Hotel departure night, full board, all game drives and walking safaris at Katavi, two chimpanzee trekking permits at Mahale, and all park fees. International flights, Tanzania entry visa, and personal items are not included. Single supplement applies.
