Kilimanjaro's Summit — Then Tanzania's Full Safari

MS-2 is RYDER Signature's most complete Tanzania mountain-safari combination — the longer Lemosho Route (or Machame) to Uhuru Peak, a full recovery day in Moshi, and then a three-destination safari including the Ngorongoro Crater full descent and two intelligence-led Serengeti nights. The program covers everything Tanzania offers in a single, coherent twelve-day journey.

The Lemosho Route’s seven-day ascent provides superior acclimatisation versus the shorter routes, improving summit probability and reducing altitude discomfort. The recovery day in Moshi is deliberately structured — not a half-day but a full rest day that prepares the body and mind for the safari. The post-summit perception of wildlife is markedly different from standard safari programs: every animal encounter carries the vivid intensity of post-achievement observation.

Your Journey, Day by Day

Day1

Arrive JRO

Arrive Kilimanjaro: The Trilogy Begins

RYDER Signature meets you at JRO and transfers you to your Moshi hotel. The arrival briefing with your mountain guide covers the Lemosho or Machame Route in full detail — the 7-day schedule, the daily distances and altitude gains, the summit push, and the descent. Equipment check confirms the kit list.

The mountain guide explains the Lemosho Route’s specific acclimatisation advantages and the physical preparation that differentiates successful from unsuccessful summits. By the end of the evening, the 12 days ahead are mapped with the intelligence and anticipation that thorough preparation creates.

Day2

Day 1 Trek

Lemosho Gate → Big Tree Camp (2,780m): The Remote West

Transfer to Lemosho Gate on Kilimanjaro’s remote western flank (3 hours from Moshi). The Lemosho forest zone is denser and quieter than Machame’s — giant trees draped in old man’s beard lichen, the occasional elephant track crossing the trail, and the mountain’s volcanic cone appearing briefly above the canopy before disappearing into cloud.

Arrival at Big Tree Camp (2,780 metres) — the first mountain camp, sheltered in the forest margin. The evening routine establishes itself: the porter team erects camp, the mountain cook prepares dinner, and the guide reviews tomorrow’s route. The Kilimanjaro trek’s rhythm begins.

Day 2 Trek

Big Tree Camp → Shira 1 Camp (3,500m): The Plateau Opens

The forest gives way to heath and the Shira Plateau begins to open — a vast high-altitude grassland stretching west, the volcanic peak of Shira visible on the northern horizon. Arrival at Shira 1 Camp (3,500 metres) provides the first full exposure to the plateau’s wind and space.

The acclimatisation process is well underway by the Shira camps — the body adjusting to altitude through the gradual gain profile that the Lemosho Route provides. The mountain guide conducts the daily physiological check.

Day4

Day 3 Trek

Shira 1 → Shira 2 Camp (3,840m) → Lava Tower Acclimatisation

The acclimatisation day — the trail crosses the full Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp and continues to the Lava Tower (4,642 metres) for a lunch and altitude exposure before descending to camp. The Lemosho Route’s gradual altitude profile means this acclimatisation day is less demanding than on the shorter routes.

The Lava Tower at 4,642 metres is the first foray into genuinely high altitude — the ice fields visible above, the cloud layer below, the air noticeably thinner. The descent to Shira 2 brings the physiological reward of the ‘climb high sleep low’ profile.

Day5

Day 4 Trek

Barranco Camp (3,976m): Vegetation Thins

The trail descends from Shira 2 to the Barranco valley and Barranco Camp (3,976 metres) — passing through the moorland’s giant groundsels and lobelias that are Kilimanjaro’s most distinctive botanical feature. The vegetation thins progressively; by Barranco, the landscape is predominantly rock and low scrub.

Barranco Camp sits beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall — tomorrow’s scramble route up the 257-metre rock face visible from the campsite. The summit briefing at Barranco covers the final two days: the Wall, Karanga, and the midnight push to Uhuru.

Day6

Day 5 Trek

Barranco Wall → Karanga Camp (4,035m): The Final Approach

The Barranco Wall scramble — Kilimanjaro’s most dramatic single day of trekking. The 257-metre volcanic rock face requires hands and feet, the exposure significant but the route well-marked. Above the Wall, the Southern Icefield and the summit cone fill the entire horizon, the scale of the objective fully apparent for the first time.

Arrival at Karanga Camp (4,035 metres) after the Wall traverse. Early dinner and early sleep — the midnight summit departure is fewer than 24 hours away. The guide conducts the final pre-summit briefing: departure time, route, summit protocol, and turnaround conditions.

Day7

Summit Day

Karanga → Barafu → SUMMIT (5,895m) → Moshi

The summit day begins at midnight. From Karanga, the team moves to Barafu Camp (4,673 metres) before the midnight departure to the summit. The steep scree and volcanic rock climb to Stella Point (5,739 metres) arrives at dawn — the first light illuminating the ice fields, Kenya visible to the south. Uhuru Peak (5,895 metres) follows: the summit sign, the crater rim, Africa’s highest point.

The descent follows: from Uhuru, back through Stella Point, down to Barafu for a rest, then the long descent through the moorland to Mweka Gate. Transfer to Moshi for the recovery hotel night — hot showers, a proper bed, and the summit certificate collected from the park office. The summit day typically covers 18–20 hours from midnight departure to hotel arrival.

Recovery

Moshi: Rest and Transition

Full recovery day in Moshi. Late breakfast, hot shower, flat ground, and a proper restaurant meal after seven days on the mountain. The body begins its post-altitude recovery: rehydration, leg rest, and the processing of the summit achievement. The safari briefing with your guide in the afternoon maps the four remaining days: Ngorongoro, two Serengeti nights, and the departure.

The recovery day is structured intentionally — no early starts, no scheduled activities, complete rest with the optional afternoon Moshi town walk or coffee plantation visit. The transition from mountain guide to safari guide is made over the afternoon briefing.

Day9

Ngorongoro + Serengeti

Moshi → Ngorongoro Crater → Serengeti

Drive from Moshi (3.5 hours) to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area for the full crater descent. The enclosed caldera’s Big Five — lion on open ground, the reliable black rhinoceros, elephant family groups at the soda lake, and the dense buffalo herds — fill the morning drive. A picnic lunch on the crater floor keeps the post-summit body in the wildlife for the full productive day.

After ascending, the vehicle continues west to the Serengeti for the afternoon entry drive. The post-summit receptivity to wildlife — the particular vividness of perception after physical achievement — makes this Ngorongoro + Serengeti day one of the most rewarding game drive days in any RYDER Signature program.

Full Serengeti

Full Day Central Serengeti

Full day in the Serengeti’s resident predator zone. Dawn drive targeting the lion prides, the riverine leopard, and the cheetah’s morning territory. The first full safari day after the Kilimanjaro ascent has a quality of attentiveness that week-long game-drive programs rarely achieve — every animal encounter is vivid, immediate, and deeply appreciated.

Bush breakfast at LUX and HEL tiers on the open plains. Afternoon drive through the golden hour to a field sundowner. The Serengeti at this point in the program — post-summit, post-Ngorongoro, with two days of safari intelligence building — is an extraordinary closing experience.

Second Full Serengeti Day: Precision Targeting

Second full day in the Serengeti deploying yesterday’s accumulated intelligence. The specific lion pride territories, the cheetah’s morning circuit, the leopard’s afternoon tree — targeted with the precision that two consecutive days enables. The post-summit sharpness of observation is still vivid on Day 11.

Afternoon extends through the golden hour. The penultimate program day — the Serengeti at its most precise and most knowingly appreciated.

Final Serengeti Morning → JRO: Tanzania Complete

Final morning game drive in the Serengeti before the return drive to Kilimanjaro International Airport (approximately four hours). The dawn drive deploys eleven days of accumulated experience for the program’s final wildlife encounter.

Drive to JRO via the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The 12-Day Kilimanjaro and Serengeti program closes at JRO — Africa’s highest summit, the Big Five caldera, and two days in Africa’s greatest predator zone combined in one extraordinary Tanzania experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Lemosho Route approaches Kilimanjaro from the remote western flank via the Shira Plateau — Tanzania’s ancient volcanic caldera, now a high-altitude grassland. The route takes 7 days to the summit versus Machame’s 6, and this single additional day is the source of its superior acclimatisation profile. The extra day is spent crossing the Shira Plateau, during which the body is exposed to 3,500–3,840 metres across two camp nights rather than transitioning through more quickly. The result is a measurable reduction in altitude sickness incidence and a higher summit success rate — typically 85–90% for well-prepared guests versus 75–80% on the shorter routes. The Lemosho Route also passes through the quietest sections of the mountain: the western forest and the Shira Plateau receive far fewer trekkers than the Machame or Marangu routes, providing a genuine sense of remoteness during the approach.
The Ngorongoro Crater descent on Day 9 of MS-2 — two days after the Uhuru summit — is one of the most consistently praised single wildlife days in the entire RYDER Signature portfolio. The enclosed caldera (19 km across, 600 metres deep) holds all Big Five in permanent residence: the black rhinoceros population is the most reliably sighted in Tanzania, the lion prides hunt on open grassland visible from 500 metres, and the enormous wildebeest and zebra herds concentrate on the permanent grassland. The champagne picnic lunch on the crater floor is a RYDER Signature standard for Mountain + Safari programs. Guests consistently describe the post-summit Big Five encounter in the enclosed caldera — the wildlife visible in its entirety from the crater floor — as the most complete single wildlife day of any Tanzania experience.
Two Serengeti nights (as in MS-2) provides a full day of intelligence-led game drives plus the arrival afternoon and a departure morning. For guests whose primary objective is the Serengeti as a post-summit reward rather than an immersive game drive program, two nights delivers three game drive sessions — sufficient for the resident lion, leopard, and cheetah of the Seronera zone. Three Serengeti nights (as in MS-5) provides two full days — the second deploying the first day’s intelligence at precision, when specific animal positions are known rather than discovered. RYDER Signature recommends two nights for guests prioritising the mountain experience and three nights for guests who want the Serengeti at its deepest.
The Serengeti after Kilimanjaro produces a specific sensory and perceptual quality that guides and guests consistently describe. After 7–8 days on the mountain’s altitude, volcanic rock, and physical challenge, the Serengeti’s open horizon, warm air, and wildlife density arrive as a sensory relief that heightens attention. The post-summit perceptual state — the dopaminergic reset that follows sustained physical achievement — makes each animal encounter more vivid, more immediate, and more personally significant than on a non-mountain safari. The lion pride’s morning hunt, observed from a vehicle at the Seronera zone two days after the Uhuru summit, is experienced with a quality of presence and emotional engagement that standard safari programs do not produce.
The Moshi recovery day is a full, unscheduled rest day — intentionally so. Hot showers, a proper hotel bed, a restaurant breakfast at whatever time feels right, and the specific pleasure of flat ground underfoot. No early starts, no packing. RYDER Signature leaves the recovery day unstructured for guests who want complete rest; optional activities for guests who feel physically capable include: a visit to Moshi town’s coffee shops and craft market, a guided tour of a Kilimanjaro coffee farm (the Chagga people’s highland coffee is among Tanzania’s finest), or a short drive to the lower slopes of the mountain for the view of Kilimanjaro that cloud typically conceals from town. The safari guide conducts the afternoon briefing, mapping the Ngorongoro and Serengeti days ahead.
Essential gear that must be brought or hired: waterproof hiking boots (broken in before the trip), trekking poles, a -10°C sleeping bag, a down jacket, waterproof outer shell, warm base layers, gloves, balaclava or buff, and a quality headtorch. A comprehensive kit list is provided at booking. Most items are available for hire in Moshi from reputable outdoor gear shops near the mountain registration offices — RYDER Signature provides recommendations for reliable hire sources. Note that hired sleeping bags should be treated with liner bag liners for hygiene. Guests flying in with luggage restrictions should use the Moshi hire option for bulky items (sleeping bag, poles, gaiters) and bring the personal items (boots, base layers) from home.
MS-2’s Lemosho Route is specifically recommended for guests who have previously turned around on the shorter Machame or Marangu routes. The most common cause of unsuccessful summits — insufficient acclimatisation — is directly addressed by the Lemosho’s additional day at altitude. RYDER Signature additionally recommends: a pre-trip consultation with a travel medicine physician about diamox use, a minimum 3-month conditioning programme starting with cardiovascular base fitness and progressing to specific altitude simulation where available, and an honest assessment of any pre-existing medical conditions that altitude may exacerbate. The guide carries supplemental oxygen at Barafu for guests experiencing altitude difficulty. No summit can be guaranteed — the mountain’s weather and individual physiology ultimately determine the outcome — but the Lemosho Route provides the best available platform for success.
The 12-Day Kilimanjaro and Serengeti is priced from USD 8,000 per person (LUX/Signature tier) and USD 15,000 per person (HEL/Pinnacle tier), based on double occupancy. Included: all transfers from JRO, certified mountain guide and porter team, mountain cook and equipment, KINAPA fees and summit certificate, Moshi recovery hotel, private safari guide and vehicle, two nights Serengeti accommodation, Ngorongoro crater entrance and picnic, full board throughout, and all northern park fees. Not included: international flights, Tanzania entry visa, personal trekking gear, and high-altitude trekking insurance.
