Visa Considerations for Tanzania and Kenya

Cross border travel requires valid entry authorization for both Tanzania and Kenya, and the two systems now work quite differently from one another, which is worth being precise about.

Tanzania

Tanzania issues a single entry eVisa for around $50 USD, applied for online in advance or, for many nationalities, obtained on arrival. Your Tanzania visa covers mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar together, no separate Zanzibar visa is needed, though Zanzibar does require its own mandatory travel insurance, purchased separately through the official Zanzibar portal before arrival.

Kenya

Kenya no longer issues visas. Since January 2024, Kenya uses the Electronic Travel Authorization, the eTA, applied for online at the official government portal before travel. The eTA costs approximately $30 USD, well below the old visa fee, and typically processes within a few days, though we recommend applying at least a week ahead of travel. Every traveler, including infants, needs their own approved eTA before boarding.

The East Africa Tourist Visa

The East Africa Tourist Visa costs $100 USD, allows multiple entries over 90 days, and covers Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda. It does not include Tanzania despite Tanzania's East African Community membership, this is the single most common point of confusion travelers run into, and it means the East Africa Tourist Visa has no cost advantage for a Tanzania and Kenya combination specifically. For that combination, the practical route is simply the Kenya eTA plus the Tanzania eVisa, applied for separately.
