Trip Planning Checklist

Your Complete Safari Preparation Timeline, From Booking to Departure

A phase by phase checklist covering documents, health, gear, and logistics, so nothing gets left until the last week.

Built to Prevent Last Minute Scrambles

Preparation in the Right Order, Not All at Once

Some tasks need months of lead time, like vaccination series or passport renewal. Others belong in the final week. This checklist is organized by timeline, not by category, so you always know what actually needs your attention right now.

Tick items off as you go. Your progress is saved in your own browser, so you can leave and come back without losing your place. Use "Clear My Progress" below if you want to start fresh, or the print button near the bottom for a paper copy.

Adjust for Your Specific Trip

A Few Additions by Journey Type

These aren't full checklists on their own, just the extra items worth folding into the phases above if they apply to you.

Kilimanjaro Climbing

  • Hiking boots broken in well before the trip, not new out of the box
  • Trekking poles and a headlamp with extra batteries
  • Altitude sickness medication if your physician has prescribed it
  • Confirmed gear rental arrangements for anything you're not bringing yourself

Beach Extension

  • Reef safe sunscreen
  • Snorkeling gear or a confirmed rental arrangement
  • Water shoes for rocky shoreline areas
  • Motion sickness medication if boat transfers are part of your plan

Family Travel

  • Each child's own passport, valid on the same timeline as adults
  • Child appropriate medications and any dietary needs communicated in advance
  • Entertainment for long transfer days
  • Comfort items from home for younger children
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How far ahead should I start this checklist?

Six or more months out, particularly for passport renewal and any vaccination series that need multiple doses. Starting earlier just gives you room to move at a comfortable pace.

What if I'm planning a last minute trip?

Talk to your RYDER Signature consultant right away. Expedited passport and visa processing exists, often for an added fee, and some vaccination schedules can be compressed.

I've been on safari before, do I still need this?

It's worth a skim even for repeat travelers. Requirements change over time, entry systems get replaced, as Kenya's did in 2024, and it's easy to assume something is still true simply because it was true on your last trip.

Can I share this with people I'm traveling with?

Yes, and it's a good idea. Each person's checkboxes save separately in their own browser, so everyone can track their own progress against the same list.
