Arrival and Transfers in Tanzania and Kenya

East African travel involves multiple airports, sometimes a border crossing, and more than one mode of transport before you reach your first camp. None of it is complicated once you know what to expect, and RYDER Signature manages every stage of it directly, but understanding the process helps you arrive prepared rather than uncertain.

Kilimanjaro International Airport sits roughly 50 kilometers from Arusha and 35 kilometers from Moshi, and despite the "international" name, it runs at an intimate scale compared to major world hubs. That means quicker processing, though fewer facilities than a larger airport: immigration and customs, currency exchange with limited hours, ATMs in both US dollars and shillings, small shops and a cafe, WiFi, and SIM card vendors.

Have every document within easy reach, know the name of your first accommodation for the arrival card, and keep your onward flight details handy. Processing takes real patience during busy periods, and courtesy toward immigration officers goes a long way.

Customs

After baggage claim, customs is generally straightforward for tourists. Items over the duty free allowance need declaring, personal electronics and photography equipment rarely raise questions, and large cash amounts require declaration. Plastic bags are restricted to biodegradable versions only, worth knowing before you pack.

Once through customs, your representative is waiting in the arrivals hall with signage bearing your name, ready to help with luggage. Cold refreshments are waiting at the vehicle, along with a briefing on what comes next and your travel documents and emergency contacts. From this point, the logistics are ours to manage.

Abeid Amani Karume International Airport handles a growing number of direct international flights, useful if your itinerary is beach focused and doesn't need mainland time at all. Zanzibar operates with its own immigration processing as a semi autonomous region, though the same Tanzanian visa covers both the mainland and Zanzibar without any additional visa needed.

Travelers arriving directly from overseas complete standard immigration and customs, with yellow fever verification if applicable, the same as mainland Tanzania. Travelers arriving from the Tanzanian mainland face only a brief security and customs check with no additional visa required.

Two Zanzibar specific items worth knowing before you land: an online health declaration is required within 24 hours of arrival for anyone flying in directly from outside Tanzania, and Zanzibar charges its own mandatory tourist insurance on arrival, around 44 US dollars, separate from any personal travel insurance you already carry. Neither is difficult, both are easy to forget if nobody mentions them ahead of time.

Many safari itineraries include light aircraft transfers to reach airstrips that simply aren't accessible by road. These small planes, typically seating somewhere between 6 and 14 passengers, fly lower than commercial jets, which often means genuinely spectacular aerial views of the landscape and wildlife below.

Combined itineraries typically cross at Namanga, the main border point on the road between Arusha and Nairobi. Processing generally takes 30 to 60 minutes depending on congestion, and the process itself is straightforward with the right documentation in hand: exit immigration on the country you're leaving, walk across, enter immigration on the arriving side, present your passport and visa or eTA documentation, receive your entry stamp, and continue to the waiting vehicle.

Each entry requires a valid passport, the appropriate visa or eTA for that country, a yellow fever certificate if required, and a completed arrival card. If you're holding the East Africa Tourist Visa for Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda, multiple entries between those three are covered under one visa, but Tanzania was never part of that arrangement and always needs its own separate document.

Using a Kilimanjaro arrival into a northern circuit safari as an example, since international flights often land in the morning, arrival day usually still has real safari time built into it.

Sleep on the flight if you can, keep comfortable travel clothing accessible, change into safari attire once you're through customs, stay hydrated, and keep your camera within reach for whatever you spot en route.
