8-Day Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar: Where the Wild Heart of Africa Beats
Elephants, crater, Serengeti lions — then fly to Zanzibar's white sand and Indian Ocean. Tanzania's greatest wildlife circuit followed by the Indian Ocean's most beautiful island.
Overview
Tanzania's Greatest Wildlife — Then the Indian Ocean
SB-1 is RYDER Signature's most popular safari-beach combination — a four-day northern circuit safari (Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti) followed by a 90-minute flight to Zanzibar's white-sand beaches and the Indian Ocean. The contrast between the Serengeti's tawny grassland and Zanzibar's turquoise water is one of East Africa's most satisfying travel juxtapositions — the dust of the bush replaced by salt air, the early morning game drives replaced by late beach breakfasts, and the wildlife intensity replaced by the Indian Ocean's warmth and clarity.
The program’s four safari days cover Tanzania’s three most celebrated parks efficiently: an afternoon at Tarangire’s elephant baobab landscape, a full crater descent at Ngorongoro (Big Five in one morning), and a full day in the Serengeti’s resident predator zone. Three Zanzibar days balance Stone Town’s cultural depth with snorkelling, dhow cruises, and beach relaxation. SB-1 is the optimal introduction to the East Africa safari-beach format.
Ancient baobabs and dry-season elephant concentration — Tanzania's most dramatic opening.
Full crater descent with picnic — the most reliable Big Five encounter in Africa.
A full day in the resident predator zone — lions, leopard, and cheetah.
90-minute flight from Serengeti airstrip to the Indian Ocean.
Stone Town culture, coral reef snorkelling, and the Indian Ocean's warmest water.
The safari-beach contrast — bush intensity to beach serenity — is one of East Africa's most romantic itineraries.

Day-by-Day
Your Journey, Day by Day
Arrive JRO
Arrive Kilimanjaro: The Safari Begins
RYDER Signature meets you at JRO and transfers you to your Arusha hotel. The arrival briefing maps the eight days: four Tanzania safari days across Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and the Serengeti, followed by the Serengeti-to-Zanzibar flight and three Indian Ocean beach days. Current safari conditions are shared from the weekly field reports.
The briefing covers what to expect in each park and introduces the Zanzibar leg — Stone Town, the beach properties, and the activities available across three days. The packing advice is important for SB-1: the transition from safari to beach requires a separate beach bag, and the 15kg soft-bag limit on bush aircraft means careful planning.
Tarangire
Arusha → Tarangire: Elephants Open the Safari
Morning departure for Tarangire National Park — the program’s elephant immersion day. The drive from Arusha (90 minutes) delivers you to the park in time for a full afternoon game drive in the Tarangire River basin. Hundreds of elephants in family groups, ancient baobab trees, and resident predators open the wildlife experience.
A sundowner in the baobab shadow closes the first safari day. Tomorrow the circuit continues northward to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — the altitude and atmosphere completely different from Tarangire’s dry, hot basin.
Ngorongoro + Serengeti
Tarangire → Ngorongoro Crater → Serengeti
A full day covering two of Tanzania’s most celebrated destinations — the Ngorongoro Crater full descent and the Serengeti entry. The crater descent from first light delivers the Big Five in the enclosed caldera, a picnic lunch on the floor keeps you in the wildlife through midday, and after ascending the vehicle continues west to the Serengeti’s entry gate.
Arrival at the Serengeti in the late afternoon and a brief orientation drive before the first camp evening. The Seronera zone’s resident predator territory — the lion prides, the riverine leopard, the cheetah on open ground — is the objective for tomorrow’s full day.
Serengeti
Full Day: Central Serengeti Wildlife
Full day in the Serengeti across two extended game drives. The dawn drive targets the overnight predator movements — lion on a fresh kill, leopard descending from a fig tree, cheetah scanning the plain. The Seronera valley’s resident wildlife delivers consistently across all seasons, and a full day with a private guide produces multiple species encounters.
The afternoon extends through the golden hour to a field sundowner on the open plains — the last of the program’s safari evenings. Tomorrow morning the flight to Zanzibar takes you from the dust and silence of the Serengeti to the Indian Ocean in 90 minutes. The bush breakfast at LUX/HEL tiers on the last safari morning.
Fly to Zanzibar
Serengeti ✈ Zanzibar: From Plains to Indian Ocean
Morning game drive before the airstrip transfer for the flight to Zanzibar. The 90-minute flight from the Serengeti’s tawny grassland to the Indian Ocean blue is one of Africa’s most satisfying travel transitions — the contrast between the two worlds is total and the delight of arriving at a white-sand beach after four days of bush driving is visceral.
Arrival at Zanzibar Karume Airport and transfer to your beach property. The Indian Ocean’s warmth, the smell of salt air, and the sound of the surf replace the Serengeti’s silence and the dust. The first Zanzibar evening — cocktails at sunset on the beach — closes Day 5.
Zanzibar
Beach Day 1: Discovery and Relaxation
The first full Zanzibar day — a morning Stone Town cultural tour and an afternoon on the beach. Stone Town’s UNESCO-listed old quarter is a labyrinth of narrow alleyways, ornate carved doors, and coral-stone architecture that reflects centuries of Arab, Indian, and African trade. The spice market, the old slave port memorial, and the rooftop views over the Indian Ocean take two to three hours.
The afternoon is pure beach: the Indian Ocean’s warm, clear water, the white sand, and the kind of horizontal rest that four days of early-morning wildlife drives creates a specific appetite for. A dhow sunset cruise can be arranged for the first evening — traditional wooden boat, cold drinks, the coastline at golden hour.
Zanzibar
Beach Day 2: Water Activities
The second Zanzibar day is dedicated to water activities — snorkelling or diving at the coral reefs, a guided boat trip to Mnemba Atoll (one of the Indian Ocean’s premier snorkelling sites), or a dolphin-watching trip at Kizimkazi on the island’s south coast. The spice farm tour is the alternative morning activity for guests who prefer land to water.
The afternoon is beach relaxation — the Indian Ocean’s colour varying from turquoise to deep blue depending on the tide and the angle of the sun. A second sunset on the beach closes Day 7 before the departure preparation for tomorrow morning.
Departure
Final Beach Morning → Zanzibar Departure
A final morning on the beach — breakfast at the water’s edge, the last swim in the Indian Ocean, the colour of the sea in the morning light fixed in memory. Departure from Zanzibar Karume Airport (ZNZ) for the onward international connection.
RYDER Signature coordinates the airport transfer and can arrange assistance with connecting flights through Dar es Salaam or Nairobi. The Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar program closes as it opened — at an airport, but with the Serengeti’s lions and the Indian Ocean’s warmth equally vivid in the memory.
