8-Day Tanzania Safari & Mafia Island: Where the Wild Heart of Africa Beats
Nyerere's wild dogs, boat safaris on the Rufiji, and walking safaris. Then fly to Mafia Island — the Indian Ocean's most pristine reef, whale sharks in season, and complete seclusion.
Overview
Tanzania's Wildest South — Then the Indian Ocean's Most Pristine Island
SB-6 pairs two of Tanzania's most exceptional and most underappreciated destinations: Nyerere National Park's boat safaris, walking safaris, and wild dog encounters, followed by Mafia Island's world-class coral reefs and one of the Indian Ocean's most reliable whale shark aggregations. Both destinations are profoundly different from Tanzania's northern circuit and Zanzibar — the wild, vehicle-free wilderness of Nyerere and the pristine marine park seclusion of Mafia together define a completely different side of Tanzania.
Nyerere’s Rufiji River system enables the boat safari — watching hippos and crocodiles from water level — and the walking safari that takes you through a landscape where lions and wild dogs also walk on foot. Mafia Island’s Marine Park, with no package tourism and coral reefs comparable to the Maldives, delivers a marine wildlife experience unavailable on the more visited Zanzibar circuit. Three nights at each destination gives both places their proper time.
Nyerere's large wild dog population pack hunts in the miombo woodland dawn.
Hippos and crocodiles at water level — no game drive equivalent in Tanzania.
Guided on-foot tracking in the miombo woodland — the bush at ground level.
October–March aggregation — one of the world's most reliable whale shark encounters.
Mafia Marine Park — undisturbed reefs comparable to the Maldives in quality.
Two of Tanzania's least visited destinations — profoundly different from the northern circuit.

Day-by-Day
Your Journey, Day by Day
Arrive Dar es Salaam
Arrive Dar es Salaam: Southern Tanzania Begins
RYDER Signature meets you at Julius Nyerere International Airport, Dar es Salaam, and transfers you to your hotel near the airport. The arrival briefing covers the 8-day program: one Dar overnight, three nights at Nyerere National Park (Tanzania’s largest and most remote wildlife destination), and three nights at Mafia Island (one of the Indian Ocean’s most pristine marine parks). Current Nyerere wildlife conditions are shared from the weekly field reports.
The briefing introduces both Nyerere’s character — the boat safaris, the walking safaris, the wild dog — and Mafia Island’s marine world, including the whale shark season dates and what to expect at the coral reefs. The packing advice covers both environments: safari kit and beach/snorkel kit within the luggage allowances for the small aircraft.
Fly to Nyerere
DAR ✈ Nyerere National Park: The Wild South
Morning domestic flight from Dar es Salaam to Nyerere National Park airstrip — approximately 45 minutes over the Tanzania coast and inland to the park. The guide meets you at the airstrip and the first game drive begins immediately: the miombo woodland landscape opens around the vehicle, the Rufiji River visible in the distance.
An afternoon boat safari on the Rufiji River introduces the park’s most distinctive experience. At water level in a small motor boat, hippos surface metres from the hull, enormous Nile crocodiles bask on sandbars within touching distance of the bank, and the extraordinary waterbird diversity — saddle-billed storks, yellow-billed storks, African fish eagles, and dozens more — fills every riverbank tree. A sundowner on the river bank as the hippos emerge for their evening grazing closes Day 2.
Nyerere Full Day 1
Full Day: Wild Dogs, Boat Safari, and the Bush
Full day in Nyerere across multiple activity types. Dawn drive deploys the overnight intelligence: the wild dog pack’s denning area is the morning’s primary target — Nyerere’s large wild dog population makes pack encounters achievable with patient positioning, and a pack hunt in the miombo woodland light is one of Tanzania’s most thrilling predator encounters. Lion prides are the secondary morning target, particularly the groups that use the river edges at dawn.
Afternoon boat safari on the Rufiji River — the second boat experience deploys yesterday’s river intelligence: the specific sandbar where the enormous crocodiles rest at this time of day, the channel bend where the hippo pod is most active, and the waterbird roosting trees. A second sundowner on the river bank closes Day 3 with the Rufiji’s extraordinary wildlife at full expression.
Nyerere Full Day 2
Walking Safari, Elephants, and Final Bush Day
Full day with a morning walking safari — one of Nyerere’s most distinctive activities, unavailable in any northern Tanzania park. An armed ranger leads the walk through the miombo woodland, tracking animals on foot: reading elephant spoor through the long grass, approaching a herd of buffalo from downwind, and observing the ecosystem’s insect, plant, and bird life at ground level. The physical experience of walking through a landscape where lions and elephants also walk changes the relationship with the wilderness fundamentally.
Afternoon game drive targeting elephant herds in the Rufiji floodplain — the large family groups that use the river banks during the afternoon hours are among Nyerere’s most spectacular wildlife subjects, the river and the woodland behind them. A final Nyerere sundowner closes the southern safari before tomorrow’s fly to Mafia Island.
Fly to Mafia
Nyerere ✈ Mafia Island: Indian Ocean Paradise
Morning game drive before the airstrip transfer and the 45-minute flight to Mafia Island. The Indian Ocean appears below the aircraft as the island approaches from the mainland coast — the turquoise water over the coral reefs, the fishing dhows in the channel, and the dense green of the island’s vegetation visible through the aircraft window.
Arrival at Mafia and transfer to the lodge. The island’s seclusion is immediately apparent — no resort strips, no package groups, no hotel rows along the beach. A small, intimate eco-lodge or boutique property on the island’s western coast provides the program’s beach base. The first afternoon is discovery: the beach, the channel view, and the warm Indian Ocean. A sundowner watching the dhows in the channel closes the transition day.
Mafia Day 1
Marine Day 1: Coral Reefs and Marine Park
First full marine day at Mafia Island Marine Park. A morning guided snorkel or dive trip to the park’s primary reef sites — the island’s coral gardens are among the Indian Ocean’s most diverse and undisturbed, with hard and soft coral formations at multiple depths supporting hundreds of reef fish species, sea turtles, and the occasional reef shark visible in the shallower sections.
For guests visiting October–March, the whale shark encounter is arranged for the morning — the guided snorkel with these gentle filter feeders (up to 12 metres long, entirely harmless) in Mafia’s channels is one of East Africa’s most extraordinary marine wildlife experiences. Afternoon beach relaxation at the lodge closes the first marine day.
Mafia Day 2
Marine Day 2: Island Exploration
Second marine day deploying the second dive or snorkel option — either deepening the reef experience at a different site (the channel walls south of the island have extraordinary coral diversity at depth) or exploring the island’s mangrove channels by kayak or canoe, where juvenile reef fish shelter in the roots and kingfishers hunt the shallows.
An afternoon walk through Kilindoni village — Mafia’s main settlement with its Swahili-Arab architecture, its working fish market, and the baobab trees that line the central street — provides the cultural context for the island’s maritime history as a former Arab trading post on the Indian Ocean route. The island’s character, entirely different from the Rufiji’s wild bush, makes the final Mafia evening a specifically peaceful closing.
Departure
Final Mafia Morning → Fly to Dar
Final morning at Mafia Island — breakfast at the lodge, a last swim in the Indian Ocean, and the transfer to Mafia Airport for the domestic flight back to Dar es Salaam. The 8-Day Tanzania Safari and Mafia Island program closes — Nyerere’s boat safaris, walking safari, and wild dogs, and Mafia’s pristine coral reefs and whale shark encounters, the most distinct and off-the-beaten-path safari-beach combination in the Tanzania portfolio.
RYDER Signature coordinates the airport transfer at DAR for international connections. For guests with time in Dar before their flight, the city’s Stone Town equivalent — the old colonial waterfront at Kivukoni and the Msasani peninsula’s seafood restaurants — offer a final Tanzania urban experience before departure.
