Watamu’s sunset dhow cruises sail on Mida Creek rather than the open ocean, and that makes all the difference. The creek’s sheltered, tidal water stays calm enough for a traditional wooden dhow to glide quietly past sandy islets and mangrove channels while the sky turns gold, without the swell that would complicate the same experience further out at sea.

Sunset Dhow Cruise
The classic Watamu sundowner: a traditional wooden dhow sailing out onto Mida Creek as the sun drops, drinks and snacks served on board while the mangroves and sandy islets around you catch the last light. It is the most popular of Watamu’s boat trips for good reason, a short, unhurried evening that needs no particular fitness or experience.
Under Sail: the dhow moves under wind power for much of the crossing, with a motor used only where needed, keeping the ride quiet.
Sundowner Service: snacks and drinks served on board as the sky changes colour over the mangroves.
Birdlife: African fish eagles and malachite kingfishers are regularly seen from the water, with flamingos and migratory waders visible in season, especially at low tide.
A Swim Stop: many cruises pause to let guests swim in the creek before continuing.
Bird sightings are noticeably better at low tide than at high tide, so ask about tide timing when you book if birdwatching matters to you.
