North Coast Reef Snorkeling
Mombasa Marine Park runs along the reef off Nyali and Bamburi, close enough for a snorkelling outing that starts and ends within the same morning. Expect a reasonable variety of reef fish and coral, with the low tide sandbars adding a scenic stop between swims.
Coral gardens: reef sections a short boat ride from Nyali and Bamburi beaches, with common reef fish, sea urchins and the occasional ray.

Glass bottom option: non swimmers can view the same reef from a glass bottomed boat.

Marine Park Day Trips (Kisite & Watamu)
For the coast’s best snorkelling, Kisite Mpunguti and Watamu are worth the day trip. Kisite pairs its reef with reliable dolphin sightings, while Watamu is generally considered to have the healthier and more varied coral of the two. Both make for a full day out, usually including a boat ride, snorkelling stop, and lunch.
Kisite Mpunguti: coral gardens alongside resident dolphin pods, roughly two hours south of Mombasa near Shimoni.
Watamu Marine Park: steep coral walls and some of the healthiest reef on the Kenyan coast, a similar distance north.
Turtles and reef fish: both parks see regular green and hawksbill turtle sightings alongside dense reef fish populations.
These involve two to three hours of travel each way, so plan them as a dedicated full day.

Choosing Your Reef
Choose the north coast reef if you want an easy morning without much planning, and Kisite or Watamu if snorkelling is a priority for your trip rather than a side activity. Families with young children or limited time generally do better staying close, while confident swimmers get more out of the day trips.
Seasonal Conditions
October to March brings the calmest seas and best visibility coastwide. The long April to June monsoon can affect surface conditions, particularly on the marine park day trips, though the sheltered north coast reef remains workable through most of the year.
