Mafia Island Marine Park has protected this stretch of reef since 1995, and the difference between here and less protected coastline is visible the moment you put your face in the water. More than fifty genera of coral and upwards of 400 fish species share this water, and because Mafia draws far fewer visitors than Zanzibar, sites that would be crowded elsewhere are often yours alone.
No certification, tank or training is required to see most of what makes Mafia’s underwater world remarkable. Chole Bay’s sheltered coral gardens sit close to shore and stay calm nearly year round, while sites further out reward strong swimmers with bigger fish and the occasional reef shark. Turtles are a near constant presence, resting on the reef or grazing seagrass beds within easy view.

Chole Bay and Marine Park Snorkelling
The waters of Chole Bay and the wider marine park hold Mafia’s most consistent snorkelling, sheltered from open ocean swell and packed with coral in a variety few destinations this accessible can match. A short boat ride from any of the main lodges puts you over reef that would draw crowds anywhere more developed, but here is often just you and the guide.
Chole Bay: sheltered, easily accessible coral formations rising from a sandy bottom, calm enough for hesitant swimmers.
Kinasi Pass: for stronger swimmers, a channel with nutrient rich water and denser marine life, best timed to the tide.
Coral diversity: table, brain and staghorn coral among many others, with butterflyfish, angelfish and schooling fusiliers throughout.
Larger species: sea turtles are common, and reef sharks or rays occasionally appear at deeper edges.
Swimming ability required; snorkelling experience is helpful but not essential for the sheltered sites.

House Reef Snorkelling
Several Mafia lodges sit directly on snorkelling quality reef, which turns snorkelling from a scheduled outing into something available whenever the mood strikes. It lacks the drama of a boat trip to a distant site, but the convenience and the chance to get to know one patch of reef well over several days has its own appeal.
Direct access: walk from your accommodation straight into snorkelling conditions, no boat or schedule required.
Repeat familiarity: multiple visits over a stay reveal patterns a single session would miss, cleaning stations, resident fish, changes with the tide.
Low tide exploration: some house reefs expose tide pools and shallow coral worth a slower look.
Reef shoes are worth packing for comfort entering and exiting over coral rubble.
We recommend lodges with the strongest house reef access to guests who prioritise convenience, and brief you on entry points and conditions specific to each property.

Wildlife Snorkelling
Beyond the coral itself, Mafia’s reefs support wildlife that turns an ordinary snorkel into something more memorable. Turtles in particular are reliable, present at several sites throughout the year and often unbothered by a quiet observer nearby.
Turtle encounters: green and hawksbill turtles are frequently seen feeding on seagrass or resting on the reef, often tolerating close, quiet observation.
Reef sharks: white tip reef sharks patrol certain sites, generally keeping their distance but occasionally curious.
Seasonal visitors: manta rays appear occasionally between October and March, and whale sharks are sometimes encountered incidentally during this same window, though dedicated whale shark trips are a separate activity.
Maintain a respectful distance and let animals approach rather than pursuing them.

October through March for the best visibility; snorkelling continues year round with reduced clarity from April to September
Snorkelling here is forgiving of a loose schedule, most sites are accessible across the year, but a little planning around season, tide and time of day makes a real difference to what you see.
Seasonal Conditions
October to March: the clearest water of the year, often 25 to 30 metres, and calm enough to access every site.
June to September: respectable visibility around 15 to 25 metres, with some sites occasionally inaccessible in rougher weather.
April and May: the long rains reduce visibility significantly; best avoided if snorkelling is the priority.
Tide and Time of Day
Mid to high tide: generally best, offering good depth without the risk of contact with shallow coral.
Low tide: reveals shallow features but raises the risk of touching the reef; best avoided at coral sites.
Early morning: calmest water and the most active fish, before wind typically builds later in the day.
Equipment
Guided excursions include mask, snorkel, fins and flotation aids as needed. Regular snorkellers often prefer their own mask for a reliable seal, and a rash guard is worth packing for sun protection during longer sessions.
Responsible Snorkelling
Use only reef-safe, mineral-based sunscreen, never touch or stand on coral, and take only photographs. Marine park fees paid as part of your excursion go directly toward the protection that keeps these reefs in the condition they are in.
