Overview
A reef built for diving, protected since 1968
Watamu Marine National Park has been protected since 1968, one of Kenya’s oldest marine parks, and more than fifty years of that protection show clearly underwater. Divers here move through a system holding upwards of 600 recorded fish species and around 150 types of hard and soft coral, a density of life that unprotected reefs along this coast simply cannot match.
Around a dozen distinct dive sites sit within 10 to 25 minutes of the shore by boat, ranging from shallow, current free sites suited to first time divers through to deeper offshore terrain with swim throughs, walls and the occasional pelagic passing at range. Turtles, both green and hawksbill, turn up reliably at several known sites, and the warmer months roughly between November and March bring the best chance of a passing whale shark, though sightings are never guaranteed.

Marine Park Reef Diving
The dive sites inside Watamu Marine National Park offer some of the gentlest, most reliably rewarding diving on this coast. Currents are generally mild, depths stay moderate, and decades of no take protection have kept coral cover and fish density well above what unprotected reefs nearby can offer.
Turtle Reef and The Canyon are the two best known sites, a shallow, current free reef known for turtles and a deeper, more dramatic site known for its walls and swim throughs, giving new and experienced divers alike a proper introduction to the park.
Turtle Reef: a shallow site around 15 metres, reliable for close encounters with green and hawksbill turtles among vibrant coral gardens.
The Canyon: steep underwater walls and swim throughs reaching around 30 metres, with white tip reef sharks occasionally sighted when a current is running.
Brain Coral Gardens: extensive formations of massive brain coral, part of the roughly 150 coral species recorded within the park.
Fish life: parrotfish, surgeonfish, angelfish, snappers and butterflyfish are a constant presence across every site.
Marine park sites are gentle enough for newly certified divers, and all sites sit within the no take core of Watamu Marine National Park.
We match first time visitors with the gentler sites in the park and save the more dramatic swim throughs at The Canyon for divers with a little more experience, so every trip suits the diver taking it.

Offshore Reef Diving
Beyond the marine park’s protected core, a handful of offshore sites offer deeper, more demanding diving and a better chance of larger marine life. These sites are more exposed to swell and current than the sheltered marine park reefs, so they suit divers with some logged experience rather than a first outing.
Tewa Caves: a deeper offshore site with genuine cave formations, drawing larger fish species into its structure.
Blue Lagoon: the deepest of Watamu’s local sites, with a real chance of reef sharks, rays and other pelagics passing at range.
Temple Point Wreck: a sunken dhow that has become an artificial reef in its own right, home to moray eels and lionfish among its timbers.
Marine life: larger groupers, barracuda and, in season, whale sharks passing offshore.
Offshore sites depend on sea conditions and are typically only run in the calmer months from November to March. Advanced certification is recommended for the deeper sites.
We only run offshore trips when conditions genuinely support them, rather than promising a dive that sea state cannot deliver, and brief every diver thoroughly on the site’s depth and current before entering the water.

Discover Scuba Diving
PADI’s Discover Scuba Diving programme is the simplest way to find out whether diving is for you, with no certification and no prior experience required. A short briefing in shallow water covers the essentials, before an instructor takes you on a single guided dive inside the sheltered marine park.
Pool or shallow water briefing: a PADI instructor covers the basic skills you need in calm, controlled water before heading out.
Guided ocean dive: a single supervised dive inside the marine park, typically no deeper than around 12 metres.
No certification required: open to complete beginners, with no prior experience or swimming test needed beyond basic water comfort.
This is an introductory experience, not a certification. Time spent here counts toward a future Open Water course if you decide to continue.
We schedule Discover Scuba sessions inside the calmest part of the marine park, so a first breath underwater happens somewhere genuinely beautiful rather than a training bay.

PADI Open Water and Advanced Certification
Watamu’s calm, shallow marine park waters make it a genuinely good place to learn, with enough visibility and marine life to keep training dives interesting rather than a chore. The full Open Water course typically runs three to four days, after which an Advanced Open Water course over a further two days opens up the deeper, more demanding offshore sites.
PADI Open Water Diver: the foundational certification, combining classroom or e-learning theory, confined water skills and four open water dives inside the marine park.
PADI Advanced Open Water: five adventure dives building on Open Water certification, typically including a deep dive and underwater navigation, often completed at the more demanding offshore sites.
Specialty courses: additional PADI specialties, such as night diving or underwater photography, arranged on request.
Completing PADI’s online theory before you arrive shortens the course by a day. Certification is recognised worldwide, not only in Kenya.
We time Open Water courses early in a stay, so newly certified divers still have days left to put their certification to use at Watamu’s better sites before departure.

Planning your visit
November through March for the warmest water and best offshore access, with year round diving inside the marine park
Diving runs year round in Watamu, but season affects which sites are accessible and what to pack. Here is how to plan a dive trip around it.
Seasonal Diving Conditions
November to March: the warmest water, calmest seas and the best chance of reaching offshore sites and passing whale sharks.
April to May: the rainy season can affect visibility and offshore access.
June to October: generally good diving inside the sheltered marine park, though the water runs cooler and a shorty or 3mm wetsuit is worth having, and outer reef sites cannot always be guaranteed.
What to Wear
A shorty or lightweight full wetsuit covers most of the year comfortably. From June to October, when the water runs a few degrees cooler, a 3mm wetsuit adds welcome warmth on longer or deeper dives. Reef safe sunscreen protects the coral you have travelled to see.
Choosing the Right Dive for Your Level
First time divers: start with Discover Scuba Diving inside the marine park before committing to a full course.
Newly certified divers: the marine park’s Turtle Reef and Brain Coral Gardens are ideal, gentle sites to build confidence.
Experienced divers: offshore sites such as Tewa Caves and Blue Lagoon offer more demanding conditions and a better chance of larger marine life.
Those learning to dive: book Open Water certification early in your stay, so there is time afterward to put it to use.
