Overview
Kenya's most accessible reef, and a marine park worth the journey
Diani has grown into Kenya’s most established diving base, home to several PADI and SSI 5 Star training centres and a house reef close enough for a spontaneous afternoon dive. The real prize, though, lies two hours south by road and boat: Kisite Mpunguti Marine National Park, a protected reserve off Wasini Island where the coral is healthier and the fish life denser than almost anywhere else on this coast.
Kisite’s reef slopes gently from around 2 metres down to roughly 32, giving both new divers and experienced ones plenty to work with in a single trip. Green turtles and dolphins turn up often enough to be a genuine expectation rather than a lucky bonus, and the marine park’s protected status means the coral cover here has held up in a way that unprotected reefs further along the coast have not.

Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park Dive Trip
The day starts with a road transfer from Diani to Shimoni, the small port historically used to hold people bound for the slave markets of Zanzibar before British intervention closed the trade. From there, a traditional dhow carries you around Wasini Island into Kisite Mpunguti Marine National Park, Kenya’s oldest marine protected area, gazetted specifically to keep this stretch of reef intact.
Two dives are standard, each lasting around 40 to 50 minutes with a qualified divemaster, and the boat stays moored over the site so non diving companions can snorkel the same reef from the surface. A seafood lunch on the return leg, usually at Wasini village, rounds out a full day out.

Marine life: green turtles and dolphins are commonly encountered, alongside dense schools of snapper, fusilier and surgeonfish along the reef wall.

Seafood lunch: a full lunch, usually featuring crab and other local seafood, included on the return leg.
Open Water certification or higher is required for the diving portion; non certified guests can join for snorkelling and lunch.
We schedule an early departure so you reach Kisite before the day boats from Wasini village crowd the best sites, and pair you with a divemaster who knows the reef’s specific turtle cleaning stations and dolphin corridors. Private dhow charters are available for couples or small groups wanting the day to themselves.

PADI or SSI Discover Scuba Diving
For first timers, a Discover Scuba style introduction is the fastest way into the water without committing to a full certification course. A short theory session and confined water practice at your dive centre cover the essential skills, then an instructor takes you on one or two shallow open water dives, usually along Diani’s own house reef.
No prior experience is required, and the pace is set entirely by how comfortable you feel. Many guests use this as a trial before deciding whether to continue into a full Open Water course later in their stay.
Confined water briefing: a short pool or shallow water session covering mask clearing, breathing and basic buoyancy.
Guided open water dive: one or two shallow dives with an instructor, typically along the reef closest to your dive centre.
Personal ratio: instructors keep small ratios, often one instructor to one or two participants for this introduction.
Certification pathway: dives completed here can often count toward a full Open Water course if you decide to continue.
A basic medical questionnaire is required before diving; certain health conditions may need a doctor’s clearance.

PADI or SSI Open Water Certification
The Open Water course is the internationally recognised entry level certification that lets you dive independently with a buddy to 18 metres anywhere in the world afterward. Diani’s warm, clear water and relaxed pace make it a genuinely good place to learn, without the cold and heavy exposure suits that complicate training in many other destinations.
The course runs over three to four days, combining classroom or digital theory, confined water skill sessions and four open water dives, usually finishing with two additional fun dives once certification is complete.
Theory sessions: completed online in advance or in person at the dive centre, covering diving physics, safety and equipment.
Confined water training: pool or shallow water sessions building core skills: mask clearing, buoyancy control, emergency procedures.
Four open water dives: completed on Diani’s reef under instructor supervision, building toward independent diving.
Certification card: issued on successful completion, recognised by dive operators worldwide.
Bonus fun dives: many centres include one or two additional dives after certification, purely for enjoyment.
Course length depends on how quickly you progress through skills; some guests complete it in three days, others prefer a more relaxed four or five day pace.
We work only with centres that include marine park fees, equipment and materials in their quoted price, since some Diani operators quietly add these later. Courses can be paired with a safari on either side of your stay, since certification and safari days both work well as bookends to a beach holiday.

Local Reef and Wreck Diving
Not every dive needs a full day and a boat to Kisite. Diani’s own fringing reef and nearby Tiwi Reef offer convenient diving for certified divers wanting a shorter, closer outing, ideal for a second dive of the day, a refresher after time away from the sport, or simply less time on the road.
Conditions here are more variable than at Kisite, since these reefs sit outside marine park protection, but healthy coral sections, moray eels, lionfish and regular turtle sightings keep local diving worthwhile between the bigger trips.
Diani house reef: a short boat ride from the beach, convenient for an easy single dive.
Tiwi Reef: a short distance north, offering good coral and fish diversity without the journey to Kisite.
Night diving: arranged on request for certified divers wanting to see the reef’s nocturnal residents, including octopus and sleeping parrotfish.
Refresher dives: a supervised review dive for certified divers who haven’t been in the water for a while.
Visibility on local reefs varies more with tide and recent weather than at Kisite; your dive centre will advise on the best conditions for the day.
We use local diving to fill the gaps around bigger excursions, an easy morning dive before a beach afternoon, or a refresher ahead of a Kisite trip later in your stay so you arrive there feeling fully comfortable in the water again.

Planning your visit
October through March for the clearest water and calmest seas
Diani’s water stays warm year round, so diving is possible whenever you visit, but visibility and sea conditions vary enough by season to be worth planning around, particularly for the Kisite Mpunguti crossing.
Seasonal Conditions
October to March: the most reliable window, with calmer seas and visibility regularly reaching 20 to 30 metres at Kisite.
April to May: long rains can bring rougher seas and reduced visibility; local diving is more weather dependent during this period.
June to September: generally good diving with some wind driven chop; visibility typically 10 to 20 metres.
Planning a Learn to Dive Trip
If certification is the goal, start the Open Water course in your first two or three days so you have time to enjoy fun dives, or even a Kisite trip, on your new card before you leave. A typical week might run: Day 1 to 3, Open Water course; Day 4, rest or beach day; Day 5, first fun dive on the local reef; Day 6, full day Kisite Mpunguti trip putting the new skills to use somewhere spectacular.
