Mombasa’s evening cruise tradition centres on the Tamarind Dhow, an authentic Swahili jahazi, the traditional wooden sailing vessel once used to carry cargo along this coast and across to the Arab states. Refitted as a floating restaurant and sailing from the Tamarind jetty on Tudor Creek, it has been part of Mombasa’s social calendar since the 1970s, and remains the coast’s best known way to combine a proper Swahili seafood dinner with a sail past Fort Jesus under lantern light.
Beyond the Tamarind, smaller operators run their own sunset and lunchtime cruises through the same waters. Between them, an evening on Tudor Creek is one of the more romantic and least effortful ways to close out a day in Mombasa.

Tamarind Dhow Dinner Cruise
The Tamarind Dhow’s flagship vessel, the Nawalilkher, is an authentic ocean going jahazi built in 1977, over 75 feet long and among the largest traditional sailing vessels still working the Mombasa coast. Fully refitted as a floating restaurant while keeping its traditional lines, it departs the Tamarind jetty each evening except Sunday, sailing gently up Tudor Creek past Fort Jesus and Old Town while guests are served a Swahili style seafood dinner on deck.
Welcome Dawa cocktail: a traditional Swahili drink of vodka, honey, lime and crushed ice, served as you board.
Seafood dinner: a multi course Swahili style meal of crab, prawns, lobster and fresh fish, prepared and served on deck.
Fort Jesus by night: the dhow sails past the lit fortress and Old Town skyline on its way up Tudor Creek.
Live music: a resident band plays through dinner and dancing as the dhow glides back to the jetty.
Book ahead for special occasions, the dhow is a popular choice for anniversaries and proposals and evening slots fill quickly.

Tamarind Dhow Lunch Cruise
A shorter, daytime alternative to the dinner cruise, sailing the same Tudor Creek route in daylight before mooring for a set lunch of Tamarind’s seafood platter or a Kenyan fillet steak, rounded off with fresh fruit, coffee and halwa.
Daytime sailing: a gentler cruise up Tudor Creek in full daylight, good for photographs of Old Town and Fort Jesus.
Seafood platter or steak: a choice of the Tamarind seafood platter or a Kenyan fillet steak, followed by tropical fruit salad, Kenyan coffee and halwa.
Welcome Dawa cocktail: the same signature drink served on the evening cruise.

Independent Sunset Cruises
Beyond the Tamarind Dhow, several independent operators run their own shorter sunset cruises through Tudor Creek and along the coastline, generally lighter on food and focused on the setting itself, a good option for a quick, atmospheric evening on the water.
Sunset views: shorter sailing routes timed to catch the sun setting over the creek or coastline.
Drinks and canapes: a lighter offering than the full dinner cruise, suited to those wanting the atmosphere without a full meal.
Smaller vessels: operated by independent boat owners rather than the Tamarind fleet, generally on more intimate craft.

Cruises run throughout the year. July to October and January to February bring the clearest skies, which makes for the best sunset and stargazing conditions on the water. The Tamarind Dhow does not sail on Sundays.
