Mombasa sits roughly midway between two very different worlds worth a day of anyone’s time. South, past Diani, the dhows of Shimoni carry visitors out to Wasini Island and the dolphin rich waters of Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park. North, Mtwapa Creek offers a gentler, closer excursion, a mangrove lined estuary where dhow trading is said to have begun on this stretch of coast, now given over to sunset cruises, birdwatching and calm water paddling.

Wasini Island & Kisite Marine Park
This is the signature day trip on Kenya’s south coast, and it holds up even with the longer drive from Mombasa. The route runs down the Mombasa to Lunga Lunga highway to Shimoni, where a traditional dhow carries you out to Kisite Mpunguti Marine Park, roughly 90 kilometres and about two hours from Mombasa. The park is known locally as the home of the dolphins, with resident pods of bottlenose and spinner dolphins and, from around July to October, the chance of migrating humpback whales. After snorkelling the coral gardens, the day usually closes with a Swahili seafood lunch on Wasini Island itself.

This is a long day given the travel involved; expect an early hotel pick up and a return in the late afternoon.

Mtwapa Creek Boat Safari
Mtwapa Creek is a mangrove lined estuary a short drive north of Mombasa, calmer and closer than the south coast excursions and well suited to an easy half day. Local history places the origins of dhow trading on this coast at nearby Mtwapa, a settlement with roughly six centuries behind it, and the creek today is used for gentle sightseeing cruises, sunset sails and paddling rather than commerce.
Mangrove cruising: calm water sailing past mangrove shorelines with regular sightings of monkeys and birdlife.
Sunset sailing: later departures time the return past Shimo la Tewa point for sunset over the baobabs on the far bank.
Sandbar and reef stop: some itineraries continue out to Mombasa Marine Park for a snorkelling stop on the way back.
Waters here are sheltered and generally calm, making this a comfortable option for those less keen on open ocean swells.
We favour the later departure slots so the sail ends with the sunset itself, and can add a dinner stop at a creekside restaurant to close out the evening properly.

North Coast Beach & Sandbar Exploration
For a lighter day closer to your accommodation, glass bottomed boat trips run from the Nyali and Bamburi beach launch points directly into Mombasa Marine Park, taking in coral gardens and the low tide sandbars that form off the reef. It suits families or anyone wanting a shorter outing between other plans.
Glass bottom viewing: reef and fish life visible without getting in the water, a good option for non swimmers.
Sandbar time: exposed sand banks at low tide, good for photographs and a walk in shallow water.
Optional snorkelling: gear is available for those wanting to get in the water over the coral gardens.

Mtwapa Creek is the better choice for a relaxed half day close to Mombasa. The north coast sandbar trip suits families or anyone slotting a short outing between other plans.
Timing
Wasini Island departures leave early, generally between 6 and 7am, to reach the marine park before the wind picks up. Mtwapa Creek suits a later afternoon slot for sunset. Sandbar trips are tide dependent and shift daily.
