MALINDI
Overview
Malindi’s coastline works two ways. South of town, inside the marine park, a reef breaks the swell and keeps the water calm and shallow, well suited to paddling close to shore at an easy pace. North of town, the open water of Malindi Bay has no reef to soften it, and picks up a reliable wind from roughly June to September, drawing kite and windsurfers to a wide, largely empty stretch of beach around Mambrui.
Jet skiing is also available within the wider marine reserve, for those who want speed over exploration. Malindi’s water sports scene overall is smaller and more relaxed than Diani’s, better suited to a morning of paddling or an afternoon session than a dedicated watersports holiday.
RYDER Signature arranges kayaking and paddleboarding in the marine park’s calmer water, kite and windsurfing sessions and lessons on Malindi Bay, and jet ski sessions for those after something faster.
Activities

30 minutes to 2 hours, longer guided paddles available on request · From $70 per person for a guided session including equipment, with simple hourly rentals priced separately and a lower per person rate for larger groups
The marine park’s reef keeps the water south of Malindi town calm and shallow, ideal for kayaking or paddleboarding at an easy pace along the shoreline and the edges of the reef itself. No experience is needed for either, and sessions run from a straightforward hourly rental to a longer, guided paddle exploring further along the coast.
Early morning tends to bring the calmest water, before any onshore breeze picks up later in the day.
Sheltered paddling: the reef breaks incoming swell, keeping the water inside calm enough for beginners.
Coastal exploration: paddle along the shoreline, around the marine park’s edges, or toward nearby mangrove channels.
Both kayaks and paddleboards: available separately, single or double kayaks included.
Self paced or guided: a simple hourly rental for confident paddlers, or a guided session for those wanting company and local knowledge.
Basic swimming ability is recommended, particularly for stand up paddleboarding. Life jackets are provided and their use is encouraged.
We can arrange either a simple rental for confident paddlers or a guided route for anyone who’d like company and a bit of local knowledge about where to paddle.
Kayak or paddleboard, paddle, life jacket, and a guide for guided sessions

1 to 3 hours for a session or lesson · From $70 per person for a lesson or guided session including equipment, with a lower per person rate for larger groups
North of Malindi town, the open water of Malindi Bay has no reef to soften the swell, and picks up a reliable wind from roughly June through September. The wide, largely uncrowded beach around Mambrui gives kite and windsurfers plenty of room to launch and ride without the congestion found on more developed coastlines further south.
Outside the windy season, conditions are generally lighter and less consistent, better suited to lessons than to advanced sessions.
Reliable seasonal wind: the strongest, most consistent conditions run from June to September.
Open water and space: Malindi Bay’s beach is wide and comparatively empty, without the crowding of busier kite spots.
Lessons and equipment rental: instruction is available for beginners, alongside gear rental for those already competent.
Self contained sessions: no reef here means fewer restrictions on where you can ride compared with the sheltered marine park side.
Suitable for beginners through lessons, though the open bay conditions ask for reasonable water confidence. Outside the June to September window, conditions can be too light for kitesurfing specifically.
We match sessions to the season, since kitesurfing conditions on Malindi Bay depend heavily on the wind being there in the first place. Outside the main window, we’d generally steer beginners toward a lesson rather than an open session.
Equipment rental, instruction for lessons, safety briefing

30 minutes to 1 hour per session · From $70 per 30 minute session, with longer sessions priced accordingly
For those after speed rather than exploration, jet skiing is available within the wider Malindi marine reserve, run from designated launch points rather than freely across the whole park. Sessions typically run in short blocks, with an operator briefing on the reserve’s boundaries and any areas to avoid before heading out.
Short, high energy sessions: typically booked in 30 minute or hourly blocks.
Guided or solo riding: available either with an operator alongside or solo for those with relevant experience.
Safety briefing included: covering the reserve’s boundaries and basic handling before setting off.
A safety briefing is required before every session. Life jackets are compulsory.
We book jet ski sessions with operators who brief riders properly on the reserve’s boundaries beforehand, rather than simply handing over the keys.

Planning
Year round; calmest paddling mornings throughout, June to September best for kite and windsurfing
Malindi’s water sports split naturally between two stretches of coast. Here is how to choose between them and time your session.
South of Malindi town, inside the marine park, the reef keeps water calm and shallow, best for kayaking and paddleboarding. North of town, Malindi Bay has no reef and picks up a reliable wind for kite and windsurfing, especially from June to September. Jet skiing runs from designated points within the wider marine reserve.
The southeast monsoon, roughly June through September, brings the most reliable wind for kite and windsurfing. Outside that window, conditions on Malindi Bay are generally lighter, better suited to a first lesson than an advanced session. Morning tends to be calmest for kayaking and paddleboarding, before any onshore breeze builds later in the day.
Book kite and windsurfing lessons ahead if your visit falls within the June to September wind season, since demand and instructor availability both rise. RYDER Signature coordinates water sports sessions with the rest of your Malindi itinerary, including boat trips and cultural mornings.
