Overview
Quiet water, no engines required
Mafia has never developed the jet ski and speedboat scene common at busier beach destinations, and that absence turns out to be one of its quieter pleasures. Kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and traditional canoeing all suit the island’s sheltered, mostly calm water, and none of them come with an engine’s noise or wake to disturb the surroundings.
These are also among the few activities here that put you in direct, self-propelled contact with the marine environment. A kayak slips into mangrove channels a boat could never reach; a paddleboard’s height above the water reveals fish and rays passing beneath before they notice you. The pace is entirely your own.

Kayaking
Kayaking opens up parts of Mafia that are otherwise hard to reach: shallow mangrove channels, quiet reef edges, and beaches with no road leading to them. The island’s calm, sheltered water makes it forgiving for newcomers, while more ambitious paddlers can cover real distance along the coastline or between smaller islands.
Mangrove channels: paddle into narrow waterways where mangrove roots shelter juvenile fish, crabs and specialised birdlife invisible from the main island.
Reef edge paddling: follow the boundary between shallow lagoon and deeper reef, coral and fish visible clearly through the water below.
Wildlife from above: rays gliding over sandy patches and the occasional turtle, spotted more easily from a kayak’s quiet approach than from a boat.
Remote beaches: reach stretches of sand with no road access, for a private swim between paddling stints.
Swimming ability required. Doubles are available for those preferring to paddle together.

Stand Up Paddleboarding
Mafia’s calm, shallow lagoons suit stand up paddleboarding well, forgiving enough for a first attempt, clear enough to reward the effort with a good look at what is passing underneath. The pace here tends toward relaxed exploration rather than distance or speed.
Lagoon cruising: glide across shallow, clear water where seagrass beds and sandy patches are visible beneath the board.
Elevated wildlife spotting: the standing position gives an unusually good view down into the water for fish, rays and, occasionally, turtles.
A gentle workout: balance and core engagement without the intensity of a dedicated fitness session.
Reasonable balance helps, though wide, stable boards make this accessible to most beginners.
We time sessions to the calmest part of the day and can provide basic instruction for anyone trying paddleboarding for the first time. Rates ease for larger groups.

Traditional Canoeing
Outrigger canoes have been used on these waters for generations, and a handful of lodges and village partnerships still offer visitors the chance to paddle or sail them, often alongside the fishermen who use them daily. It is a slower, more grounded alternative to a plastic recreational kayak, built from a design shaped specifically for this coastline.

Fisherman guidance: some sessions pair visitors with local fishermen who share knowledge of traditional navigation and fishing grounds.
A living tradition: a direct, hands on connection to a maritime culture still practised daily rather than preserved only for visitors.

Water sports here work best around the calmest hours of the day, and pair naturally with the rest of a diving or beach-focused stay. Here is how to plan around them.

June to September: generally good, though afternoon wind can pick up and affect longer sessions.
April and May: conditions vary considerably during the long rains; keep plans flexible.
Best Time of Day
Early morning, 6 to 8am: the calmest water of the day, ideal for paddleboarding and photography.
Mid-morning, 8 to 11am: still good before the wind typically builds.
Late afternoon, 4 to 6pm: winds often ease again, with attractive light for a final session.
Midday is generally best avoided, when wind is at its strongest.
