Overview
The longest whale shark season on the East African coast
From October through March, plankton blooms in the waters off Mafia draw whale sharks close to shore in numbers rarely matched elsewhere, giving the island one of the longest and most reliable whale shark seasons anywhere in the world. Sightings peak between November and February, when the animals feed at the surface and swimming alongside one, sometimes several in a single outing, becomes possible for anyone comfortable in the water, no diving certification required.
Whale sharks are the headline, but Mafia’s marine park supports a fuller cast throughout the year. Green and hawksbill turtles are present year round, dolphins ride the bow waves of passing boats, and humpback whales pass offshore in August and September on their migration. Traditional and deep-sea fishing round out the picture for those drawn to the water for reasons beyond wildlife alone.

Whale Shark Swimming
Whale sharks visit Mafia’s waters seasonally, drawn by plankton concentrations that support their filter feeding. Despite lengths that can exceed ten metres, these animals are entirely harmless to swimmers, and their tolerance of human presence at close range is what makes the encounter feel so immediate. The experience is straightforward in structure, spot, approach, swim, but the scale of the animal makes it unlike anything else in the water here.
Spotting and approach: experienced boat crews watch for dorsal fins or shadows breaking the surface before positioning swimmers ahead of the shark’s path.
In-water encounter: slip in and swim alongside as the animal continues feeding, close enough to make out the spotted pattern and the scale of the mouth filtering water.
Multiple sightings: a single outing often produces encounters with more than one individual.
Responsible guidelines: a minimum three-metre distance, no touching, no flash photography, and encounters that end the moment the shark moves on.
Sightings are very likely in peak season but never guaranteed, this is wild, free ranging wildlife.
We partner only with operators demonstrating a genuine commitment to responsible practice, following distance guidelines and contributing to ongoing whale shark research. We time trips for the peak November to February window whenever schedules allow.

Turtle and Dolphin Encounters
Beyond the seasonal whale sharks, Mafia’s waters support wildlife encounters throughout the year. Turtles are reliably present at several reef and seagrass sites, dolphins frequently ride the bow waves of passing boats, and humpback whales migrate past the island’s waters each August and September, generally seen from the surface rather than underwater.
Sea turtles: green and hawksbill turtles feed on seagrass and rest on the reef, present in the marine park throughout the year.
Dolphins: Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins are the most frequent species, often approaching boats on their own terms rather than being pursued.
Humpback whales: visible from the boat during their August to September passage offshore, though rarely encountered underwater.
Respectful distance: no pursuit of any species; encounters happen only when the animal chooses to approach.
No guarantees with wild animals; patience improves the odds considerably.

Deep-Sea Fishing
Beyond the marine park’s protected reefs, Mafia’s open waters hold game fish that draw serious anglers, sailfish, marlin, tuna, wahoo and dorado among them. Because these grounds see comparatively little pressure, the fishing here tends to reward the effort of getting this far offshore.
Target species: sailfish, marlin, tuna, wahoo and dorado in waters that see far less fishing pressure than more established destinations.
Experienced crew: local captains know the productive offshore grounds and how they shift with the season.
Catch-and-release options: available for billfish, with tuna and other species typically retained.
A reasonable level of stamina helps for extended fights with larger fish.

Responsible Wildlife Tourism
Mafia’s whale shark tourism follows guidelines designed to protect the animals: a minimum three-metre distance unless the shark approaches first, no touching, no flash photography, small swimmer groups, and an end to the encounter the moment the animal moves away. We only work with operators who hold to these standards consistently, not only when a guide happens to be watching.
Planning Around the Season
Whale shark season overlaps with Mafia’s best diving and calmest seas, so a five to seven day stay comfortably fits a dedicated whale shark morning alongside two or three dive days and a cultural or excursion day. Outside the whale shark season, turtles, dolphins and (in August and September) humpback whales keep the marine calendar interesting.
