A coastline still fished the old way
Fishing has shaped daily life around Lamu for as long as people have lived here, and much of it is still done the way it always was: hand lines, woven traps and cast nets worked by fishermen who learned the trade from their fathers rather than from a manual. The techniques favour patience and reading the water over horsepower, and the boats involved are usually the same small craft used for getting around the archipelago generally.
The waters themselves reward that patience. Bottlenose and humpback dolphins are a regular sight around the channel and open water beyond it, sea turtles pass through on their way to nesting beaches further north around the Kiunga Marine National Reserve, and the reef systems around the archipelago’s smaller islands still support healthy, diverse fish populations. Further offshore, the same nutrient rich waters draw serious sport fishing, with sailfish, marlin and tuna passing through in season.

Traditional Fishing with Local Fishermen
This is fishing as it has been practised around Lamu for generations: hand lines, cast nets and inherited knowledge rather than sonar and heavy tackle. Joining a local crew for a morning on the water is less about landing a trophy fish and more about spending time with people whose working knowledge of these waters runs deep, built from a lifetime rather than a guidebook.
The pace is unhurried and the technique matters more than the equipment, which makes this a genuinely different experience from a sport fishing charter, closer to a shared morning’s work than an organised excursion.
Traditional techniques: hands on practice with net casting, hand line fishing and, where used locally, woven fish traps.
Local knowledge: fishermen share an understanding of fish behaviour, seasonal patterns and productive spots built up over a working lifetime on this water.
Cultural exchange: hours spent together on a small boat make room for real conversation, not just a photo opportunity.
Fresh catch: a good morning’s catch is often cleaned and prepared in traditional style to share.
Results depend on tide, season and a fair amount of luck, as with any fishing trip; the value here is in the experience and the company as much as the catch.

Dolphin and Marine Wildlife Watching
A quieter alternative to fishing itself, this trip goes looking for the archipelago’s marine wildlife rather than trying to catch it. Bottlenose and humpback dolphins are seen fairly regularly in the channel and open water around Lamu, and the same trip often turns up sea turtles, rays and a healthy variety of reef fish along the way.
Trips run at a gentle pace, timed for the calmer morning hours when marine life tends to be most active near the surface.

Sea turtles: encounters are possible during calmer boat trips and snorkelling stops, particularly toward the Kiunga Marine National Reserve to the north.
Reef and birdlife: healthy reef systems support a wide range of fish, while the channel and mangroves attract herons, kingfishers and migratory waders.
Sightings are never guaranteed, as with any wildlife watching at sea, but dolphins are seen with reasonable regularity in this stretch of water.

Deep Sea Sport Fishing Charter
Beyond the reef, the same current fed, nutrient rich waters that support Lamu’s inshore fishing draw serious sport fishing further out. The stretch of ocean between Lamu and Watamu, known as the North Kenya Banks, produces sailfish, marlin, tuna, wahoo and kingfish in season, and charters here run alongside those offered at better known fishing destinations further south on the Kenyan coast.
This is a different pace and price point from a morning with a local fisherman: a proper offshore boat, trolling tackle and a captain focused on finding fish rather than teaching technique.
Big game species: sailfish and marlin from around October through April, with yellowfin tuna and wahoo particularly active from August to October.
Reef and inshore fishing: lighter tackle fishing around the reefs and channels for kingfish, giant trevally, barracuda and snapper.
Catch and release: local charter captains generally follow catch and release practice for larger billfish to protect stocks.
Deep sea charters need advance booking, since boats and experienced captains are limited and fill up quickly in peak season (October to April).

Marine Wildlife Around Lamu
Dolphins: bottlenose and humpback dolphins are seen regularly around the Lamu channel and the open water toward Manda and Kiwayu.
Sea turtles: green, hawksbill and olive ridley turtles all occur in these waters, with the Kiunga Marine National Reserve to the north an important nesting area for the region.
Reef life: the archipelago’s reefs, including those around Manda Toto, support a healthy range of fish, rays and invertebrates, helped by the area’s relative remoteness compared to busier stretches of the Kenyan coast.
Sustainable Fishing on the Lamu Coast
Traditional fishing around Lamu, using hand lines, traps and nets, takes only what a household or small crew can use, in contrast to industrial trawling that has depleted stocks elsewhere on the East African coast. Supporting these traditional crews directly, rather than only large charter operations, helps sustain a way of fishing that has kept this coastline productive for generations. Book traditional fishing and wildlife watching a day or two in advance.
