The centrepiece is the Wasini Island and Kisite Mpunguti excursion, a single day that manages to fit in dolphin watching, protected reef snorkelling, a traditional dhow crossing and a Swahili seafood lunch that has built its own reputation independent of everything around it.
Quieter alternatives exist for travellers who have already done the signature trip, or who would simply rather see fewer other boats. Funzi Island, reached along mangrove lined creeks rather than open water, receives a fraction of Wasini’s visitors and trades some of the snorkelling focus for a slower, more community centred day.

Wasini Island and Kisite Mpunguti Day Trip
This full day excursion has become the south coast’s best known outing, and the reputation is largely earned. The day begins with an early drive from Diani to Shimoni, a small fishing village with a difficult history as a holding point for people bound for the slave markets of Zanzibar before the trade was suppressed in the nineteenth century.
From Shimoni, a traditional dhow carries guests out into the Shimoni Wasini channel, where resident pods of bottlenose and humpback dolphins are encountered on most mornings, before continuing to Kisite Mpunguti Marine National Park for snorkelling and on to Wasini Island itself for a seafood lunch and a walk through the village.
Dolphin watching: the Shimoni Wasini channel holds resident bottlenose and humpback dolphin populations, with morning sightings common, though never guaranteed.
Kisite Mpunguti snorkelling: around one to two hours in the protected marine park, among healthier coral and denser fish life than most unprotected sites nearby.
Dhow sailing: a traditional wooden sailing vessel carries you between stops, its lateen sail a genuine part of the day rather than a formality.
Wasini village walk: a guided stroll through the island’s coral rag landscape, its small Swahili village, and the mangrove boardwalk at its edge.
Seafood lunch: a full Swahili spread, typically crab, prawns, grilled fish, coconut rice and chapati, with lobster available on request at some operators for a supplement.
Group size varies significantly by operator. Smaller boats and private charters give noticeably more relaxed snorkelling time than the larger shared dhows.

Funzi Island Excursion
Funzi Island sits further south, reached along mangrove creeks rather than open water, and receives only a fraction of the visitors that Wasini does. The approach itself is part of the appeal: narrow channels through dense mangrove forest, tidal flats exposed at low water, and birdlife that rarely features on a standard Diani itinerary.
The island’s community lives largely by fishing and small scale agriculture, and a Funzi day tends toward slower cultural immersion rather than the snorkelling focus of the Wasini route, making it a good second excursion for travellers who have already done Kisite.
Mangrove channel crossing: navigate narrow tidal channels lined with mangrove forest, home to herons, kingfishers and numerous other coastal birds.
Funzi village visit: a walk through a small, largely traditional fishing community with minimal tourist infrastructure.
Sandbank stop: tide permitting, a stop at an exposed sandbank for swimming in open, secluded water.
Seafood lunch: prepared by local families, offering a more intimate version of the coastal seafood spread found at Wasini.

Dedicated Kisite Mpunguti Snorkelling Trip
For travellers who have already done the full Wasini day and want more time in the water rather than another village walk and lunch, a dedicated snorkelling trip focuses entirely on Kisite Mpunguti Marine National Park itself. Smaller groups and a tighter focus mean more time at each site and a more flexible pace than the standard combined excursion allows.
Multiple snorkel sites: three to four distinct locations within the marine park in a single outing, rather than the one main stop typical of the combined Wasini day.
Smaller groups: dedicated trips generally run with fewer snorkellers per boat than the shared Wasini excursions.
Flexible pacing: more time in the water at each site and less time on cultural or dining stops.
Lunch is not always included on dedicated snorkelling trips; confirm this when booking.
