The Retreat at Ngorongoro is a nature-inspired lodge set on over 60 acres of land overlooking the Ngorongoro Forest in Karatu. Developed with a genuine commitment to the landscape, the property was planted with more than 40,000 indigenous trees to restore the land to its original lush character. The result is a deeply verdant setting that feels removed from the tourist circuit, even as the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara are both within easy reach for day excursions.
The lodge offers a swimming pool, restaurant and bar, and a menu of activities ranging from game drives to cultural walks. Its atmosphere is peaceful and personal, suited to travellers who want a thoughtful, well-appointed lodge without the formality of the region’s most historic estates.
Spacious cottages are individually appointed with local art, king or queen beds, mosquito nets, in-room fireplaces, and decks with chaise lounges overlooking the forest. Each includes en-suite facilities with rain shower, his-and-her basins, and a wardrobe with in-room safe.
Lake Manyara Airport (LKY) is the nearest airstrip, approximately 45 minutes by road from Karatu. Charter flights from Arusha and Kilimanjaro are available. The lodge can arrange road transfers from either airport.
