Segera Retreat is one of Africa’s most remarkable safari destinations a 50,000-acre private wildlife conservancy in the heart of the Laikipia Plateau, owned and operated by the Zeitz Foundation (the charitable arm of Jochen Zeitz, founder of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town). The conservancy more than three times the size of Manhattan, at an altitude of 1,700–1,800 metres and malaria-free is a sanctuary for Big Five species including a newly introduced population of black rhino, as well as endangered Grevy’s zebra, African wild dog, reticulated giraffe, and the rare patas monkey. The lodge itself is as culturally significant as it is ecologically. An extraordinary art collection including the original yellow biplane from the Oscar-winning film Out of Africa i integrated throughout the botanical gardens and communal spaces, with a satellite gallery of the Zeitz MOCAA Collection and an evocative outdoor sculpture garden.
Ten individually designed luxury villas sit in lush botanical gardens with cascading waterfalls, freeform saltwater pools, and views toward Mount Kenya. The villas range from Garden Villas (one-bedroom with private jacuzzi and swing beds) through Villa Segera and Segera House to the Garden House (two-storey, outdoor stone bath). All include private decks, butler service, organic vegetable garden cuisine, and the full 4C (Conservation, Community, Culture, Commerce) sustainability ethos that runs through every aspect of the operation. Activities include game drives, guided nature walks, night safaris, cultural encounters, helicopter excursions, back-of-house conservation tours, botanical garden tours, and art walks.
Laikipia is reached by a 40–60 minute charter flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport (WIL) to Nanyuki Airport (NYK) or a private airstrip on or near the conservancy. SafariLink and Air Kenya both serve the Nanyuki route. The camp arranges transfers from the airstrip. By road from Nairobi the journey takes 3–4 hours via the A2 highway north through Nanyuki.
