Sasaab is a spectacular luxury lodge by The Safari Collection, perched on a cliff above the Ewaso Nyiro River in the 400-square-kilometre Westgate Community Conservanc a Samburu-community-owned landscape that lies just outside the national reserve and is home to over 600 Samburu families. The lodge was conceived from the outset as a community tourism project to help protect the wilderness and its wildlife for future generations, and around 75% of the team are employed from the surrounding Samburu community. The architecture is a masterful fusion of Swahili and Moroccan design, built into the cliff edge to maximise the cooling river breezes and capture sweeping panoramic views across the Laikipia Plateau toward the jagged peaks of Mount Kenya.
Nine canvas-sided suites seven individual and one interconnected family suite (two-bedroom) each exceed 100 square metres. All have private plunge pools, four-poster king-size beds, enormous open-air bathrooms, rooftop stargazing beds, and private verandas where elephant herds can be watched bathing in the river below. A main pool overlooks the river; a separate private upper pool sits at the property’s highest point. Activities include game drives (in both the conservancy and the reserve), night drives, walking safaris along the river, camel rides, quad biking, helicopter safaris, fly camping, Samburu village visits, and spa treatments at the hillside spa. The Sasaab private airstrip makes fly-in access straightforward from Nairobi.
Samburu is served by scheduled daily charter flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport (WIL), approximately 60–90 minutes. Air Kenya, SafariLink, and FlyALS operate routes to Kalama, Samburu, and Buffalo Springs airstrips. The camp arranges road transfers from the airstrip, which typically include a game drive en route. By road from Nairobi takes approximately 6 hours via the A2 highway north through Isiolo.
