Olonana Lodge is where the A&K Sanctuary story began: established in 1999 by Abercrombie & Kent as their first proprietary camp, the lodge was rebuilt and expanded into the contemporary masterpiece it is today 14 glass and adobe suites on a private stretch of the Mara River, poured every year in local clay by Maasai women, a building technique that integrates the lodge seamlessly into the riverbank landscape. The result is unapologetically modern in its clean lines and natural materials, yet rooted in Maasai cultural practice in a way that feels genuine rather than decorative. The lodge sits just north of the Mara Triangle on a secluded bend of the river, with hippos wallowing below the dining terrace and Big Five encounters waiting minutes away on morning drives.
Fourteen en-suite suites including two honeymoon suites with outdoor showers and the three-bedroom Geoffrey Kent Suite with its own heated private infinity pool, dedicated chef, housekeeper, and guide offer between 130sqm and a full private house experience. Each suite has floor-to-ceiling folding glass doors, a wraparound terrace over the river, a freestanding bath, rain shower with double overhead fitting, double basins, and a half-moon sofa area. The farm-to-table cuisine uses produce from the camp’s own organic garden; the chef adjusts menus to dietary requirements daily. Bush breakfasts, sundowners in the wild, hot-air balloon safaris, and Maasai village visits supplement twice-daily game drives in the Mara Triangle which drives without the crowd-heavy limitations of the reserve’s central areas.
The Maasai Mara is reached by a 45-minute scheduled charter flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport (WIL). Multiple daily flights are available on shared charters, operated by several Kenyan carriers. International travellers arriving at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) can transfer to Wilson Airport or arrange a private charter flight directly to the camp’s nearest airstrip. Road access from Nairobi takes approximately 5–6 hours and is not recommended except for the most budget-conscious travellers.
