Ol Tukai Lodge is one of Amboseli National Park’s most iconic properties, positioned at the heart of the park with unobstructed views of Mount Kilimanjaro on one side and the wetlands where elephants wade and drink in silhouette against the mountain backdrop on the other. The site carries remarkable historical weight: the lodge opened in 1996 on the same location used as a base camp by the film crew who shot the 1952 classic Snow at Kilimanjaro, starring Gregory Peck. The park it overlooks is home to one of Africa’s most studied elephant populations over 1,500 individuals whose family histories have been documented by the Amboseli Elephant Research Project for more than 40 years, producing some of the world’s most intimate knowledge of elephant behaviour and society.
Eighty luxury chalet-style rooms are positioned to offer views of either the wetlands or Kilimanjaro; all are en-suite, equipped with fans, mosquito nets, safe, tea and coffee facilities, and a private terrace. Two rooms are built to EU accessibility standards. The lodge’s dining room features a remarkable hand-crafted sisal tapestry depicting the Maasai people, and opens onto a veranda garden where elephants and zebras sometimes wander to the perimeter. Facilities include a freeform swimming pool, a full spa and wellness centre, tennis court, children’s playground, a conference room for up to 200 delegates, restaurant, two bars, and complimentary WiFi. The lodge also hosts the Amboseli Elephant Research Project on site, giving guests access to one of Africa’s foremost conservation programmes.
Amboseli Airport (ASV) is served by scheduled charter flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport (WIL), a journey of approximately 45–60 minutes. The camp arranges road transfers from the airstrip. By road from Nairobi the journey takes approximately 4 hours on the A104 highway. Private charters from JKIA can be arranged directly to Amboseli.
