Ngare Sero Mountain Lodge is one of East Africa’s oldest family-owned properties, adapted from a German colonial farmhouse built in 1905 and operating as a lodge since 1974. Set on 50 acres of forest reserve on the slopes of Mount Meru, the property surrounds a private mirror lake and is home to colobus and Sykes monkeys, over 200 bird species, and a variety of small wildlife. On a clear morning, both Kilimanjaro and Meru are visible from the grounds few properties in the region can claim this combination of historical character, natural setting, and mountain panorama.
The lodge’s interiors carry the character of its colonial origins: open fires, antique furniture, Persian rugs, a stone-flagged dining room, and a long veranda from which to watch the lake and the forest. Activities include fly fishing, horse riding, gondola tours on the lake, guided nature walks, and yoga classes. Meals are home-cooked with fresh produce from the garden.
Ten Garden Rooms, two Main House Suites, a Kilimanjaro Summit Suite, and a Farm Cottage offer a range of configurations. Garden Rooms have private verandas; the Summit Suite covers 160 square metres in the manor’s roofspace with Kilimanjaro views.
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is approximately 30 minutes by road in the Usa River area. Arusha Airport (ARK) is around 20 minutes. The lodge is conveniently located between both airports and can arrange transfers on request.
