About Man Eaters Camp

About Man Eaters Camp

Man Eaters Camp takes its evocative name from one of East Africa’s most dramatic colonial stories: the two maneless lions of Tsavo who terrorised Indian and local workers during the construction of the Uganda Railway in 1898, killing scores of men and halting construction for months before being shot by Colonel John Patterson a tale that inspired the 1996 film The Ghost and the Darkness. The camp sits on the banks of the Tsavo River at the precise location where Patterson established his camp, just 1km off the Nairobi-Mombasa highway and 2km from Tsavo West’s entrance gate, making it both one of Tsavo’s most historically resonant properties and one of its most accessible. An on-site museum documents the original construction story and the man-eater episode in absorbing detail.

Twenty-five fully furnished en-suite luxury tents are built in traditional African thatched style on the banks of the Tsavo River, each with a private balcony looking across the water toward Tsavo National Park. The resident hippo pod, resident crocodiles, and wildlife that comes to drink at the river make game viewing possible without leaving camp. The Tsavo River Restaurant overlooks the river and serves international, Indian, and Kenyan cuisine with breakfast and lunch buffets and a la carte dinner options. A rock-built swimming pool, Simba Mbili bar with river views, spa, nightly campfire, conference room, and on-site museum complete the facilities. Game drives into both Tsavo East and Tsavo West depart daily from camp.
