Lake Natron Camp is one of East Africa’s most distinctive safari experiences: a small, intimate camp of ten Bedu shade tents positioned at the southern end of Lake Natron in the Great Rift Valley, directly beneath the base of Ol Doinyo Lengai Tanzania’s only active volcano and sacred mountain of the Maasai. The camp was designed specifically for this extraordinary and challenging environment. Its patented Bedu shade nets were engineered to keep guests cool in the fierce Natron heat while allowing the breezes of the rift valley to circulate through the accommodation.
Lake Natron is one of the world’s most important flamingo breeding grounds. Over one million lesser flamingos gather on its alkaline shores, and the spectacle especially at dawn and dusk is among the most dramatic in African nature. The camp is also ideally placed for trekking to the Ngare Sero waterfall, visiting the ancient hominid footprints preserved in hardened ash nearby, and attempting the challenging night climb of Ol Doinyo Lengai for those who want to see sunrise from the crater rim. A natural spring-fed stream beside the camp provides a cool swimming pool unique in this arid landscape.
Ten Bedu shade tents each feature a king-size bed with Egyptian linen, en-suite shower, eco-toilet, and a private path to the natural pool. Solar power is used throughout. The main Bedouin-style dining and lounge area is furnished with hammocks, Persian rugs, and cushions.
There is a private airstrip near the camp and charter flights can be arranged from Arusha. The camp is approximately 240km from Arusha, and flying is the most comfortable option for guests who prefer to avoid the road journey.
