Kicheche Laikipia Camp is an eco-award-winning intimate luxury tented camp in the wilderness zone of Ol Pejeta Conservancy Kenya’s largest black rhino sanctuary and the home of the last two surviving northern white rhinos on Earth. The camp is positioned in the foothills of Mount Kenya at an altitude of 6,000 feet, nestled at the foot of an indigenous forest beside a tranquil waterhole that provides a constant spectacle of wildlife: elephant, waterbuck, hippo, and a superb diversity of birdlife visit regularly. Kicheche is a family-owned operation with four camps in Kenya’s finest conservancies; the Laikipia camp has received the Gold Eco-Rating from Ecotourism Kenya and contributes 25% of its turnover to wildlife conservation and community projects.
Six spacious tented rooms including one two-bedroom family tent use reclaimed wood furniture, warm burnt-orange textiles, Egyptian cotton linen, hammocks, and private hammock-strung decks to create a homely, unpretentious atmosphere. En-suite bathrooms have flush toilets, showers, and double vanities; a fireplace in the main mess tent makes evenings around the dinner table particularly memorable. Activities are extraordinary and diverse: day and night game drives, guided walks, canoeing on the dam, mountain biking across the plains, lion tracking, visits to the northern white rhino sanctuary, and excursions to the Ngare Ndare Forest and Mount Kenya. Rates are full board inclusive of all meals, drinks, drives, and laundry.
Laikipia is reached by a 40–60 minute charter flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport (WIL) to Nanyuki Airport (NYK) or a private airstrip on or near the conservancy. SafariLink and Air Kenya both serve the Nanyuki route. The camp arranges transfers from the airstrip. By road from Nairobi the journey takes 3–4 hours via the A2 highway north through Nanyuki.
