About Greystoke Mahale

About Greystoke Mahale

Greystoke Mahale is a Nomad Tanzania property widely regarded as one of Africa’s most extraordinary and unique safari experiences a remote castaway lodge perched between the gin-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika and the dense, chimp-inhabited forests of the Mahale Mountains National Park in western Tanzania. There are no roads to reach it. Guests arrive after a long journey by air and boat, and the reward is a place unlike any other on the continent: white sand beaches, a forest full of wild chimpanzees, and the world’s second-deepest lake stretching to the horizon of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Eight open-fronted bandas are built from reclaimed dhow wood the timber of old fishing boats that once sailed Lake Tanganyika and are tucked into the forest line to minimise visual impact. Each banda has an en-suite bathroom with running water and a flush toilet, a dressing area, and an upstairs chillout deck with lake views. The main mess a sprawling, open-sided structure on the beach serves as the dining, lounge, and library space, with the famous ‘Big Bird Bar’ at the water’s edge for sunset drinks. Chimpanzee trekking with Greystoke’s expert naturalist guides is the principal activity; kayaking, swimming in the lake, forest hikes to hidden waterfalls, and dhow cruises along the lakeshore provide a rich range of alternatives.
