Governors’ Il Moran Camp is the most intimate property in the Governors’ Camp Collection a legendary name in Kenyan safari history and the operator of Kenya’s first permanent luxury tented camp. Il Moran sits deep within the Musiara sector of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, hidden in a canopy of ancient riverine trees along the Mara River, with just ten spacious tents spaced along the winding banks. The camp’s size a maximum of 20 guests creates an experience of extraordinary privacy and personal service: the game drives, the boma evenings, the pre-dawn tea service, and the meals on the raised river decking all feel bespoke rather than programmed. Il Moran has received a GOLD rating for sustainability from Eco-Tourism Kenya, acknowledging its environmental practices and community contributions.
Ten tents have been fully refurbished in a contemporary design with dark wooden tables, oversized blue couches, tribal portraits, and carved olive-wood beds fashioned from reclaimed local timber. Each has a huge en-suite bathroom with a freestanding claw-foot bathtub, walk-in rain shower, double vanity, and a private veranda. Rates include accommodation, all meals, selected drinks, up to three game drives daily, and laundry. Hot-air balloon safaris, spa treatments, fly camping, and Maasai village visits are available at additional cost. The camp’s riverside position puts hippos, crocodiles, and the drama of the wildebeest river crossings directly outside the tents during migration season.
The Maasai Mara is reached by a 45-minute scheduled charter flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport (WIL). Multiple daily flights are available on shared charters, operated by several Kenyan carriers. International travellers arriving at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) can transfer to Wilson Airport or arrange a private charter flight directly to the camp’s nearest airstrip. Road access from Nairobi takes approximately 5–6 hours and is not recommended except for the most budget-conscious travellers.
