Finch Hattons Luxury Tented Camp is one of Kenya’s most iconic and romantic luxury safari camps, named after Denys Finch Hatton the aristocratic British hunter, aviator, and naturalist immortalised as Karen Blixen’s great love in Out of Africa. The camp evokes the elegance and adventure of the colonial safari era while delivering thoroughly contemporary luxury in one of the world’s most dramatic wilderness settings: a 35-acre private concession within Tsavo West National Park, centred on natural freshwater springs fed by rain that filters through the Chyulu Hills. The springs sustain a permanently resident hippo pod, attract extraordinary wildlife including elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, and lesser kudu (unique to Tsavo), and frame a backdrop of Mount Kilimanjaro rising to the south.
Seventeen luxury tented suites including two two-bedroom family suites and the presidential Finch Hatton Suite with its own private plunge pool are set among trees and elevated on wooden platforms for a full view of the springs and the wildlife that gathers there. Two infinity pools, a full spa with hammam and yoga pavilion, a gym, a curated camp library, a children’s club, and fine-dining by award-winning chefs complete the offer. Acquired by Virgin Limited Edition (Sir Richard Branson’s portfolio) in 2024, the camp continues to develop its extraordinary programme of experiences: game drives, night drives, guided hikes in the Chyulu Cloud Forest, visits to the Shetani Lava Flow and Mzima Springs, Maasai village visits, and helipad access for scenic flights.
Tsavo is served by several airstrips. Tsavo West’s Finch Hattons Airstrip and Kilaguni Airstrip are reached by charter flights from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport (WIL) in approximately one hour. Tsavo East is served by Voi and Manyani airstrips. Scheduled charters operate with SafariLink and Air Kenya. By road, Tsavo is approximately 4–5 hours from Nairobi and 4–6 hours from Mombasa along the A109 Nairobi-Mombasa highway. The SGR Standard Gauge Railway connects Nairobi and Mombasa with stations at Mtito Andei and Voi, both close to park gates.
