Our Story

Born Into This Land.

I did not discover East Africa. I am Maasai. I grew up on the plains that travelers journey thousands of miles to see. Everything I have built starts from that truth.

I am Ojung'u Sirikwa. Most people who work with me know me as Ryder. I grew up Maasai, in a pastoral community on Tanzania's northern plains, and I built this company from the ground up because I believed East Africa deserved a better class of guide than the industry was producing.

Not someone who studied this place from a classroom or moved here to chase an industry. Someone who was born inside it, who grew up knowing its wildlife, its communities, and its rhythms the way other people know their own neighbourhoods. This is the only honest answer I have to the question every serious traveler eventually asks: why should I trust you with this journey?

Where It Begins

A Maasai Childhood

My earliest years were spent in a Maasai community on Tanzania's northern plains. The Serengeti. Ngorongoro. Amboseli. These are not destinations I discovered as a professional. They are the landscapes my people have lived inside for generations. Elephants moved through the land our community grazed. Lions crossed the horizon before dawn. The wilderness was not something I had to learn to love. I was born already knowing it.

That matters more than it might first appear. There are many qualified safari guides in East Africa and hundreds of professional operators. But the number of people who founded a company like this from genuine Maasai belonging to the land, from a childhood spent inside the very ecosystems their clients travel thousands of miles to experience, is very small. I am one of them.

I also watched, as a boy, what happened when travelers came to my community. They arrived with preconceptions and left carrying something they had not expected. Something genuine. Those early observations became the foundation of everything I eventually built.

"I watched people discover something real about my culture. Not performances designed for tips or photo opportunities staged for cameras. These were genuine moments where travelers and community members connected as humans. Travelers left carrying understanding that would change how they saw the world. That mutual transformation fascinated me even as a child."

Learning From the Inside Out

I began my professional life at Sirikwa Travel, the family tourism company my relatives had built over many years. I started at the bottom, deliberately. Reservations, permit management, transport logistics, the invisible infrastructure that holds a journey together. Guests never notice this machinery when it works. They notice immediately when it does not. I spent years making sure it worked.

Moving into sales and travel consultation, a different kind of skill revealed itself: the ability to hear what a traveler is actually asking for beneath what they say they want.

From 2016 to 2020 I progressed through operational management, leading teams and coordinating complex multi-destination journeys. By the time I decided to build my own company I had worked every position in the operation. I understood the business from every angle. And I had developed very clear views about where most operators were getting it wrong.

"When someone says they want to see the Big Five, they are rarely talking about species identification. They are expressing a desire to feel awe, to witness power and beauty beyond daily experience, to carry home stories their friends will not believe. My job was not fulfilling literal requests. It was understanding deeper motivations and creating experiences that satisfied them."

Field Experience

Eighty Expeditions

Professional training teaches you the industry. Personal expeditions teach you the place. Alongside those professional years, I undertook more than eighty personal journeys across Tanzania and Kenya. These were not familiarization trips or site checks from a vehicle window.

I tracked lions across the Serengeti over multiple days, watching how prides behave when no one is rushing toward the next sighting. I stood at the Mara River during crossings, not once but many times, understanding not just the spectacle but the ecological pressures driving the wildebeest toward the water. I traveled to Katavi and Ruaha, remote parks that most operators never visit and few travelers ever reach.

I summited Kilimanjaro by multiple routes, in different seasons and conditions. Not for credentials. Because I needed to know exactly what my clients would face on every route, at every altitude, at every stage of the climb.

"I saw how rushed itineraries prevented meaningful wildlife observation. I experienced how overcrowded sighting spots destroyed the serenity that makes wilderness valuable. I witnessed how some operators treated guides and staff poorly, how they cut corners on safety. Those observations did not make me angry. They made me determined to create an alternative."

Company History

From Vision to RYDER Signature

2016 to 2020

Sirikwa Travel

Four years working every function at the family company. Reservations, operations, sales, team management. Learning the industry from every position before building anything of my own.

2020

The Founding

I founded my company in 2020. The timing, by any conventional measure, was terrible. The pandemic had collapsed international travel entirely. But small scale and local focus proved to be unexpected advantages. Every client mattered completely. Every journey had to be right. That discipline, earned under genuine pressure, became the standard the company still holds.

2024

RYDER Signature

By 2024 the company had grown into something that deserved its own name. A signature is what you put on something when you stand fully behind it. Every journey that leaves this company has my name on it. That is not a marketing line. It is a personal standard I hold myself to on every itinerary I design.

The Name and What It Means

Most people who work with me know me as Ryder. It is what I go by. Ojung'u Sirikwa is my full name, and I am proud of it. Ryder is what has followed me through this industry, the name clients use, the name that travels.

RYDER Signature means something specific to me. A signature is what you put on something when you stand fully behind it. Every journey that leaves this company has my name on it. That is not a marketing line. It is a personal standard I hold myself to on every itinerary I design.

Small by Design

I run a small company and I intend to keep it that way. This is a choice, not a limitation. Genuine personal attention from people who know this land deeply is simply not compatible with scale. If you travel with RYDER Signature, you are working with the people who designed your journey and are accountable for it. That accountability is only possible at a certain size.

There are no routing queues. No templated packages adjusted for your name. No call centres. You speak directly with me or with a member of my team who knows your itinerary as well as I do.

What I Believe

I believe the best person to show you East Africa is someone who belongs to it. Not someone with a local partnership arrangement or a regional office. Someone who was born here, grew up here, and has spent their life learning this place as a Maasai, as a Tanzanian, as someone for whom this is home. That is who I am. It is what this company is built on.

We work with community-owned conservancies, locally led guiding teams, and properties genuinely invested in East Africa's future. The landscapes our clients come to experience exist because of the communities protecting them. I do not treat that as a sustainability checkbox. It is the foundation of how we operate.

"If you want to explore East Africa with someone who was born inside it, and who built this company to share it honestly, I would like to plan your journey."
