Zuri Zanzibar is a Design Hotels member property on Kendwa Beach, Zanzibar’s most celebrated tide-free stretch of sand on the island’s northwest coast, 50km from Stone Town. The resort was designed by the London-based studio Jestico + Whiles with a strong emphasis on sustainability and local materials: bungalows, villas, and communal spaces feature handcrafted furniture, polished and exposed woods, locally sourced artefacts, and a warm African-chic identity that genuinely reflects Zanzibar’s cultural heritage rather than imitating it. Solar panels, an in-house water bottling facility, and community projects in the nearby village of Kendwa support the property’s eco-conscious credentials.
The 56 bungalows, suites, and villas are distributed through a tropical garden leading down to the 300-metre private beach via a spice garden, outdoor gym, and infinity pool. Garden Bungalows (66sqm) have private hammock terraces; Jacuzzi Bungalows add a private outdoor jacuzzi; Suites (with double terrace and separate living room) elevate the experience further; and the resort’s Villas (200–317sqm, 2 bedrooms, private pool and kitchen) provide the ultimate family or group retreat. Three restaurants, including Upendo (the signature ocean-view table d’hôte restaurant) and a poolside terrace serve a fusion of European, African, Arabic, and Indian cuisines. The Maua Spa offers Zanzibar-inspired treatments using local spices and oils.
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) is approximately 55–60km from Nungwi, about a 1-hour drive north along the island. The hotel arranges airport transfers. Daily flights connect Zanzibar with Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, and other regional hubs.
