Stanley’s Kopje is the only camp in Mikumi National Park positioned on an elevated rocky outcrop, giving it a 360-degree panoramic view over the Mkata floodplain the park’s premier game-viewing zone that no other property in Mikumi can match. The camp was rebuilt following a fire and reopened in 2011, named after the explorer Henry Morton Stanley who passed through this area in 1871. It is a Foxes Safari Camps property, sharing the same family-run ethos of personal service, excellent guiding, and family-friendly safari hospitality that characterises the wider Foxes portfolio across southern Tanzania.
Twelve tented rooms are distributed around the lower perimeter of the kopje on raised wooden platforms with thatched roofs, each with a private veranda offering plains views. The main area at the crest of the hill houses the bar, dining room, and pool, with an octagonal stone-built bar and sweeping views in every direction. The nearby Mwanamboga waterhole draws game hippos, crocodiles, buffalo, lion, elephant, impala, zebra, and giraffe within sighting distance from camp throughout the day. Game drives and walking safaris cover the park, and day excursions to Udzungwa Mountains National Park can be arranged.
Twelve tented rooms on raised wooden platforms under thatched roofs around the lower kopje, with private verandas, double or twin beds, and en-suite bathrooms with solar-heated showers.
Mikumi airstrip is the nearest landing strip, served by scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam (approximately 45 minutes) and occasional Zanzibar connections. The camp is 5km from the busy Tanzam Highway entry point into Mikumi and a short drive from the airstrip. By road from Dar es Salaam the journey takes approximately 6 hours.
Note: The camp is closed during April due to heavy rains on the black cotton floodplain. The open season is approximately June to February.
