Solio Lodge is The Safari Collection’s most exclusive and intimate property the only accommodation in the private Solio Game Ranch, a 45,000-acre sanctuary that holds one of Africa’s densest concentrations of both black and white rhino. With approximately 250 rhinos (170 white, 70 black) on a single private ranch, Solio offers something almost impossible to find elsewhere in Africa: the near-guarantee of close, unhurried encounters with rhino on every game drive, in an exclusively private landscape shared with no other vehicles. The ranch also supports large numbers of buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, and a spectacular variety of birdlife. On clear days, the peaks of Mount Kenya are visible from across the plains.
Five elegant rooms in the main lodge and a private two-bedroom cottage occupy a beautifully restored colonial farmhouse complex with large open fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling glass doors, private gardens, and a freeform swimming pool. Each room has a fireplace, private sitting area, and the floor-to-ceiling glass frontage that allows guests to watch the wildlife that wanders to the lodge boundary without leaving their bed. The lodge is celebrated for its cuisine: menus feature locally grown ingredients, and bush meals, bush breakfasts, and fireside dinners are regular highlights. Activities include day and night drives in the private ranch, guided walks, horse riding, cycling, and day excursions to the Aberdare Mountains by helicopter. Rates include all meals, local drinks, drives, and laundry.
Laikipia is reached by a 40–60 minute charter flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport (WIL) to Nanyuki Airport (NYK) or a private airstrip on or near the conservancy. SafariLink and Air Kenya both serve the Nanyuki route. The camp arranges transfers from the airstrip. By road from Nairobi the journey takes 3–4 hours via the A2 highway north through Nanyuki.
