The Fairmont Mount Kenya Safari Club is one of Africa’s most legendary colonial-era lodges, occupying 100 acres of manicured grounds on the equator in the shadow of Mount Kenya. Founded in 1959 by actor William Holden alongside Henry Strauss and Carl Hirschmann, the original Safari Club attracted a golden-age membership roster that reads like a who’s who of Hollywood and global celebrity. Today managed by Fairmont Hotels & Resorts, the property retains its air of patrician elegance while delivering contemporary luxury and a full conservation programme. The grounds straddle the equator guests can stand in both hemispheres simultaneously and the views of Mount Kenya’s glacial peaks on clear mornings are among the most spectacular in the country.
More than 120 rooms, cottages, and suites are distributed across the beautifully landscaped property, ranging from Garden and Valley View Rooms through to Heritage and William Holden Suites. All are thoughtfully furnished with a blend of colonial character and contemporary comfort. Facilities are resort-scale: four restaurants, three bars, an outdoor heated pool, a world-class spa, tennis courts, equestrian facilities, a nine-hole golf course, horse riding, trout fishing, and a Wildlife Conservation Centre that operates the Mountain Bongo restoration programme. The conservancy is accessed for game drives and guided walks. Full conference and event facilities make the property one of Kenya’s premier corporate and wedding venues.
Mount Kenya is served by a 50–60 minute charter flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport (WIL) to Nanyuki Airport (NYK), followed by a short road transfer. By road from Nairobi the journey takes approximately 3.5–4 hours on the A2 highway through Thika and Karatina.
