Essque Zalu Zanzibar is an intimate boutique resort nestled in a natural cove on Zanzibar’s northeast coast near Nungwi, combining big, bold architecture with a genuine sense of place. The resort is immediately recognisable for its towering makuti thatched roof the highest on the island which crowns the central pavilion housing two restaurants, three bars, and a sprawling lagoon-style pool. The design philosophy eschews the understated naturalist approach of many Zanzibar properties in favour of unapologetic scale and visual impact, creating a resort that is both immersive and dramatic.
Forty suites and eight villas offer either Indian Ocean or tropical garden views from spacious rooms decorated in neutral tones with local artworks. Each suite has a private outdoor sitting area; the three to four-bedroom Villas offer the ultimate privacy with their own plunge pools, private spas, spacious living rooms, fully equipped kitchens, and secluded garden terraces. The Essensia Wellness Spa is unashamedly indulgent: two couples treatment rooms, four single rooms, a Vichy shower, sauna, and steam room deliver the full therapeutic range. Activities include a dive centre, snorkelling, water sports, and the Maisha Cookery Studio for Swahili cooking adventures.
Abeid Amani Karume International Airport (ZNZ) is approximately 55–60km from Nungwi, about a 1-hour drive north along the island. The hotel arranges airport transfers. Daily flights connect Zanzibar with Dar es Salaam, Nairobi, and other regional hubs.
