About Chada Katavi Camp by Nomad

About Chada Katavi Camp by Nomad

Chada Katavi is Nomad Tanzania’s pioneering bush camp in Katavi National Park, one of Africa’s most remote and unvisited protected areas. Founded by wildlife photographer Roland Purcell over 20 years ago, the camp sits on the edge of the Chada floodplain one of the most biologically rich and dramatic wildlife habitats in Africa. When the dry season tightens the park around two seasonal water sources, the resulting concentrations of buffalo, elephant, hippo, crocodile, giraffe, and lion deliver wildlife viewing that few parks anywhere on the continent can match. Because so few visitors make the journey, it’s common to spend an entire day on safari without seeing another vehicle.

Six classic safari tents are set under the shade of ancient acacia and tamarind trees, raised on wooden platforms and spaced generously apart. The camp retains a deliberately expeditionary character: canvas walls, bucket showers, open-fronted living, and an emphasis on wildlife above creature comforts though the food is excellent and the guiding is among the finest in Tanzania. Game drives go out twice daily; walking safaris with armed guides offer genuine immersion in a park where the wildlife is almost entirely unhabituated to vehicles, making encounters feel startlingly intimate. Fly camping at satellite sites deep in the park is Chada’s signature adventure.
