Angama Mara from the Swahili for ‘suspended in mid-air’ is one of Kenya’s most celebrated safari lodges, set 1,000 feet above the floor of the Great Rift Valley on the Oloololo Escarpment, looking directly down over the Mara Triangle and the plains of Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. The lodge was built on a site recognisable to fans of the 1985 film Out of Africa: the original accommodation built for the film’s cast and crew once stood here, and the famous Out of Africa picnic scene replicated by Angama as a guest dining experience was filmed just below the escarpment. Owner-operated by Steve and Nicky Fitzgerald since 2015, the lodge combines superlative guiding with an architectural vision by Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens that places every one of its 30 Tented Suites along the escarpment edge with the same breathtaking 180-degree view of the Mara below.
Thirty glass-fronted Tented Suites are divided equally between self-contained North Camp and South Camp each functioning as an intimate lodge of 15 suites. Every suite exceeds 100sqm including the private deck, with an 11-metre floor-to-ceiling glass front, polished parquet floors, freestanding bathtub, rain shower, double vanity, Maasai-red design accents, personal bar and safe, and a butler’s lobby for discreet early morning service. The two camps share a central Pavilion with a 12-metre rim-flow pool, fitness centre, photography studio, Map Room, and Maasai Beading Studio. Daily game drives descend the private road into the Mara Triangle; walking safaris follow the escarpment; hot-air balloon rides, garden-to-table lunches in the Shamba, and community visits complete the programme. Full board rates include all meals, drinks, drives, walks, and laundry.
Angama Mara has its own private airfield, reached by a 45-minute scheduled charter flight from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport (WIL). Multiple daily flights are available on shared charters. Guests arriving on international flights at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO) can connect via a private charter directly to Angama’s airfield, or transfer to Wilson Airport for the shared charter service. Road access from Nairobi takes approximately 6–8 hours and is not recommended.
